Karrinyup was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1962 to 1989. The district was based in the beachside northern suburbs of Perth. First contested at the 1962 state election, it was won by Liberal Country League candidate Les Nimmo Leslie Charles "Les" Nimmo (23 February 1897 – 6 November 1972) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1947 to 1956 and again from 1959 to 1968. Karrinyup, Western Australia
Karrinyup is a suburb of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia, and is located 12 km north of Perth's central business district. Its local government area is the City of Stirling. History The name Karrinyup was originally derived from the word ''Careniup'', a Noongar name for a nearby swamp, an Aboriginal word apparently meaning "the place where bush kangaroos graze". It may also mean "the place where spiders are". In the 1840s, Samuel Moore took up a grant of in the northern part of the suburb. Moore's grant, Swan Location 92 was surveyed by P Chauncey in 1844 and Chauncey recorded a large swamp just to the east of Karrinyup as Careniup Swamp. In 1929, the foundation committee developing the Lake Karrinyup Country Club golf course opted to change the spelling. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. 1962 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 31 March 1962 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The Liberal-Country coalition government, led by Premier Sir David Brand, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Albert Hawke. The election resulted in a confirmation of the status quo, with the only apparent seat changes since the 1959 election being due to the changes of affiliation of the two Independent Liberal members. Edward Oldfield, representing Mount Lawley, had joined the Labor Party during the previous term, whilst Bill Grayden, representing South Perth, had joined the Liberal Party. Both were re-elected. The Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), branded as Liberal Western Australia, is the division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Western Australia. Founded in March 1949 as the Liberal and Country League of Western Australia (LCL), it simplified its name to the Liberal Party in 1968. There was a previous Western Australian division of the Liberal Party when the Liberal Party was formed in 1945, but it ceased to exist and merged into the LCL in May 1949. Leslie Charles "Les" Nimmo (23 February 1897 – 6 November 1972) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1947 to 1956 and again from 1959 to 1968. Nimmo was born in Hobart, Tasmania, to Frances (née Grahame) and James Nimmo. He served with the Royal Australian Navy during World War I, and on his return to Hobart worked as a shop assistant. Electoral District Of Wembley Beaches
The Electoral district of Wembley Beaches was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Western Australia. The district was named for the inner western Perth suburb of Wembley, which fell within its borders. Wembley Beaches came into existence at the 1950 election, and was largely created from the northern and coastal sections of the Leederville, which had grown considerably in population in the years immediately following World War II. The seat included the inner suburbs of Floreat Park, Jolimont and Wembley, and areas further north including Doubleview, Gwelup, Innaloo, North Beach, Scarborough, Trigg and Watermans Bay. While reasonably safe for the Liberal Country League, Wembley Beaches was won for a term by the Labor, who were relatively strong in the Scarborough and Innaloo region throughout the seat's existence. 1989 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 4 February 1989 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Labor government, led by Premier Peter Dowding, won a third term in office against the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Barry MacKinnon. The result was a major swing against the Labor Party, coming in the wake of revelations of dealings between Government and business that came to be known as WA Inc. James George Clarko (21 July 1932 – 7 April 2020) was an Australian politician.
