Electoral District Of Geelong
The electoral district of Geelong is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It centres on inner metropolitan Geelong and following the June 2013 redistribution of electoral boundaries includes the suburbs of Belmont, Breakwater, East Geelong, Geelong, Geelong West, Newtown and South Geelong, Herne Hill, Manifold Heights, Newcomb, Newtown, St Albans Park, Thomson, Whittington and part of Fyansford. The seat first existed from 1856 to 1859 as a four-member seat. It was split into Geelong East and Geelong West in 1859, but re-created in 1876 as a three-member seat. It was cut back to a two-member seat in 1889, and became a single-member seat in 1904. It was abolished in 1976, but re-created in 1985. In its current incarnation, it has historically been a marginal seat with demographics similar to the state at large. As such, it was held by the governing party of the day from 1985 to 2010. Christine Couzens
Christine Anne Couzens (born 6 February 1958) is an Australian politician. She has been a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly since the 2014 state election, representing the seat of Geelong. Background Couzens was born and raised in Geelong, and has been a long time resident of Geelong West. She previously worked in the office of the former Member for Geelong Ian Trezise as his electorate officer. At the time of her preselection, she was the vice-president of the Geelong Trades Hall Council and had previously served as the council's president. Couzens attended Corio Technical School, leaving at the age of 14 to take up work in a cake factory - though "absolutely hated the methodical, monotonous work". James Harrison (engineer)
James Harrison (17 April 1816 – 3 September 1893) was a Scottish people, Scottish Victoria (Australia), Victorian newspaper printer, journalist, politician, and pioneer in the field of mechanical refrigeration. Harrison founded the ''Geelong Advertiser'' newspaper and was a member of the Victorian Legislative Council and Victorian Legislative Assembly. Harrison is also remembered as the inventor of the mechanical refrigeration process creating ice and founder of the Victorian Ice Works and as a result, is often called "the father of refrigeration". In 1873 he won a gold medal at the Melbourne Exhibition by proving that meat kept frozen for months remained perfectly edible. Alexander Thomson (pioneer)
Dr. Alexander Thomson (1800 – 1 January 1866) was elected as the first mayor of Geelong and held the position on five occasions from 1850 to 1858. Thomson was the first settler in the area known as Belmont, a suburb of Geelong and called his homestead Kardinia, a property now listed on the Register of the National Estate. Early life Thomson was the son of Alexander Thomson, a shipowner of Aberdeen, Scotland, baptised 28 March 1798. He was educated at Dr Todd's school at Tichfield, Aberdeen University, and at London, where he studied under Sir Everard Home and qualified for the medical profession. In March 1824 he married Barbara Dalrymple. Personal information Brooke was born at Boston, Lincolnshire on 15 May 1826 the son of John Brooke, a journalist and Mary Ann. Charles Read (c.1825 – 3 March 1910) was a tailor and politician in colonial Australia, a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Alexander Fyfe (1826 – 2 May 1903) was a Scottish-born settler of Victoria, Australia, who became a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, Victorian Legislative Council and the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Charles Sladen
Sir Charles Sladen, (28 August 1816 – 22 February 1884), Australian colonial politician, was the 6th Premier of Victoria. Sladen was born in England near Walmer, Kent, the second son of John Baker Sladen, deputy-lieutenant of the county. He was educated at Shrewsbury and later at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. In 1840, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB). He migrated to Australia in 1841, and in February 1842 arrived in the Port Phillip District (later Victoria). He was soon admitted to the Victorian bar, and practised as a solicitor in Geelong until 1854, when he took up farming near Winchelsea. In 1840 he married Harriet Amelia Orton. The 2014 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 29 November 2014, was for the 58th Parliament of Victoria. All 88 seats in the Victorian Legislative Assembly and 40 seats in the Victorian Legislative Council were up for election.
