Electoral District Of County Of Durham
The Electoral district of County of Durham was an electorate of the New South Wales Legislative Council at a time when some of its members were elected and the balance were appointed by the Governor. It was named after Durham County, which lies on the north side of the Hunter River. It was created by the 1843 Electoral Districts Act and initially returned one member. It returned two members with the expansion of the Council in 1851 to 54, 18 to be appointed and 36 elected. In 1856 the unicameral Legislative Council was abolished and replaced with an elected Legislative Assembly and an appointed Legislative Council. Durham County, New South Wales
Durham County was one of the original Nineteen Counties in New South Wales and is now one of the 141 Cadastral divisions of New South Wales. It is bordered on the south and west by the Hunter River, and on the north and east by the Williams River. It includes Aberdeen and Muswellbrook. Charles Cowper
Sir Charles Cowper (), (26 April 1807 – 19 October 1875) was an Australian politician and the Premier of New South Wales on five occasions from 1856 to 1870. Cowper did useful work but does not rank among the more distinguished Australian politicians. Cowper's governments had a fairly coherent Liberal tendency, a trend which continued with the governments of Henry Parkes and later developed into the Free Trade Party. In 1852, Parkes referred in public to his "mild, affable and benignant character". In later years he spoke of his "quick insight in dealing with surrounding circumstances, and much good humour and tact in dealing with individuals". His political adroitness was such that it secured for him the popular sobriquet of "Slippery Charley". Probably Cowper deserved this title no more than Bishop Wilberforce deserved his of "Soapy Sam", but Rusden speaks of Cowper as "ever anxious to link himself with a majority" and frequently shows animus when speaking of him. The ''Maitland Mercury'' is Australia's third oldest regional newspaper, preceded only by the ''Geelong Advertiser'' (estab. 1840) and the ''Launceston Examiner'' (estab. 1842). Andrew Lang (Australian Politician)
Andrew Lang (1804−3 June 1874) was a Scottish-born farmer, builder and politician in the Colony of New South Wales. He was the third son of William and Mary Lang; his father was a small landowner and ship's joiner. His brothers George and John had migrated to New South Wales and Andrew followed with his parents and sister Isabella in 1823 aboard the vessel ''Greenock''. George acquired of land near Maitland, which was between what is now Largs and Paterson. He then purchased an additional which he named Dunmore. George died in 1825 and his property passed to Andrew. His father and Andrew built Dunmore House around 1830. Andrew also acquired land near Maitland and in the Illawarra. Alexander Park (politician)
Alexander Park (1808 – 21 July 1873) was a Scottish-born land owner and politician in colonial New South Wales, Australia. He was born in Selkirk to attorney Alexander Park and Alice Veitch. He migrated to New South Wales in 1826 and was given a land grant in the Paterson district. He owned large vineyards and probably also pastoral land.
