Electoral District Of Clayfield
Clayfield is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. It is centred on the inner northern suburb of Clayfield in the state capital of Brisbane. The seat was first created in 1950, and consistently returned members for the Liberal Party until its abolition in 1977. The bulk of the seat was merged into nearby Merthyr. It was recreated in 1992 as part of the electoral reforms that ended Bjelke-Petersen-era malapportionment, and was easily won by Liberal candidate Santo Santoro, the last member for Merthyr and later a Borbidge government minister. Santoro was re-elected in 1996 and 1998, but was defeated in a shock result in 2001 by actress and Labor candidate Liddy Clark. Clark held on to the normally safe Liberal seat for two terms, but after a controversy-scarred term as a minister, was defeated by Liberal candidate Tim Nicholls in 2006. Tim Nicholls
Timothy James Nicholls (born 6 April 1965) is an Australian politician and a former leader of the Liberal National Party of Queensland. He served as the Treasurer of Queensland and the Minister for Trade of that state between March/April 2012 and 14 February 2015. He is the member for Clayfield in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. He was originally a member of the Liberal Party including a stint as its deputy leader, but joined the Liberal National Party in 2008 when the Liberal Party and the National Parties merged in Queensland. Education Nicholls was educated at Trinity Grammar School in Melbourne and the Anglican Church Grammar School in Brisbane. He completed a Bachelor of Laws at Queensland University of Technology. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. Ivan Brown (politician)
Ivan Milton Brown (10 November 1922 – 19 May 1977) was an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from May 1976 until his sudden death in May 1977. Brown was born in Dromana, Victoria. He served in World War II, serving in the Middle East and South Pacific from 1940 until 1945 with the 2/7th Australian Infantry Battalion. He was an electrical wholesaler and distributor and manufacturer's agent before entering politics. Brown was a member of the Liberal Party's state executive and the party's chairman in the federal seat of Lilley from 1973 to 1975, and was campaign director for a number of local, state and federal election campaigns. John Murray (Queensland Politician)
John Chester Murray, MBE (31 December 1915 – 25 January 2009) was an Australian politician. Murray was born in Melbourne, the illegitimate son of a member of the prominent Chaffey family of Mildura, but raised in Sydney. He was educated at The King's School, Parramatta until forced to withdraw due to the Great Depression, after which he worked as a jackeroo, miner and drover for several years. In 1939, he enlisted for service in World War II with the Second Australian Imperial Force, serving with the 2/13th Battalion, 20th Brigade. He served in North Africa, becoming one of The Rats of Tobruk, and later in New Guinea and Borneo, rising to infantry section leader and intelligence officer. He leased his first grazing property, "Gidgee" in far western New South Wales in 1946, and bought his first property, "The Orient" in north Queensland, in 1951. Harold Taylor (Australian Politician)
Harold Bourne "Squizzy" Taylor (25 February 1892 – 6 December 1972) was a Company executive and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Taylor was born in Brisbane to parents John Taylor and his wife Ada Jeannie (née Bourne). He was educated at Brisbane Boys' Central School and in World War I fought in Egypt and Gallipoli. He commanded the 27th Battery AIF from 1916 to 1917 and was mentioned in dispatches and wounded in 1917. He was then promoted to Major and awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1918. from 1918 until 1919 he was a member of the Brisbane Military Censorship Committee. In World War II he was Commander of 2nd AIF Artillery Reinforcements Training Regiment in 1941 to 1942. Campbell Kevin Thomas Newman (born 12 August 1963) is a former Australian politician who served as the 38th Premier of Queensland from 26 March 2012 to 14 February 2015. 2009 Queensland State Election
The 2009 Queensland state election was held on 21 March 2009 to elect all 89 members of the Legislative Assembly, a unicameral parliament. The election saw the incumbent Labor government led by Premier Anna Bligh defeat the Liberal National Party of Queensland led by Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg, and gain a fifth consecutive term in office for her party. Santo Santoro (born 27 April 1956) is a former Australian politician and a former deputy leader of the Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), Liberal Party in Queensland. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1989 to 2001; and a member of the Australian Senate from 2002 to 2007, representing the state of Queensland.
