Tasmanian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or Lower House, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. The other is the Legislative Council or Upper House. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. The Assembly has 25 members, elected for a term of up to four years, with five members being elected in each of five electorates, called divisions. Each division has approximately the same number of electors. Voting for the House of Assembly is by a form of proportional representation using the single transferable vote (STV), known as the Hare-Clark electoral system. By having multiple members for each division, the voting intentions of the electors are more closely represented in the House of Assembly. Since 1998, the quota for election in each division, after distribution of preferences, has been 16.7% (one-sixth). 1903 Tasmanian State Election
The 1903 Tasmanian state election was held on 2 April 1903 in the Australian state of Tasmania to elect 35 members of the Tasmanian House of Assembly. Women got the right to vote at the election. Elliott Lewis, leader of the Ministerial group, entered the election as the incumbent Premier of Tasmania. At the election, the group lost 10 seats and Lewis lost his seat. The Opposition led by William Propsting won government. The Workers' Political League (the future Australian Labor Party) fielded candidates for the first time, winning three seats. John Earle became leader of the parliamentary party in 1906. Henry Lette
Henry Elmes Lette (christened 10 August 1829 – 15 August 1892) was an Australian cricketer and politician. His middle name is frequently misreported as "Elms". Cricket Lette was a left-arm underarm bowler who played for Tasmania. He was born in Curramore and died in Launceston. Lette made a single first-class appearance for the side, during the 1851–52 season, against Victoria. From the lower order, he scored 2 runs in the first innings in which he batted, and a duck in the second. Lette bowled 29 overs in the match, taking 7 wickets. Politics Lette represented Launceston in the House of Assembly from November 1862, and was Chairman of Committees of the Tasmanian House of Assembly from July 1877 to 1892. George Crosby Gilmore
George Crosby Gilmore B.A., LL.M., (7 December 1860 – 15 January 1937) was an Australian politician, commonly referred to as Crosby Gilmore. He was born in Launceston. He qualified LLM at Cambridge University and was admitted barrister-at-law of the Inner Temple. In 1893 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as the member for George Town. He retired in 1900, but in 1903 he returned to the House as the member for Waratah. He resigned in March 1906 to run for West Hobart West Hobart is an inner-city suburb of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Charles Hamilton Bromby
Charles Hamilton Bromby (17 July 1843 – 24 July 1904), BA LCL was an Attorney-General in the colonial Tasmanian government. Early life Bromby was the second son of Right Rev. Charles Henry Bromby, Bishop of Tasmania, by Mary Anne, eldest daughter of the late William Hulme Bodley, of Brighton, Sussex. He was born at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 17 July 1843, and educated at Cheltenham College and St. Edmund's Hall, Oxford, where he graduated. Legal and political career He entered as a student of the Inner Temple on 7 June 1864, and was called to the bar on 18 November 1867. He emigrated to Tasmania, where he arrived in December 1874, and was M.H.A. for Central Launceston from 1876 to 1877, for Norfolk Plains from 1877 to 1878, and subsequently for Richmond. William Hart (1825 – 7 February 1904) was a Tasmanian businessman and politician born in England. He amassed considerable wealth and served in all three tiers of Government: Local, House of Assembly and Legislative Council. Robert Sadler
Robert James Sadler (7 January 1846 – 10 May 1923) was an Australian politician. He was born in Launceston. Sadler was elected Mayor of the city for 1897. In 1900 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as the Liberal Democrat member for Launceston.
