Electoral District Of Belyando
Belyando was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland in 2 incarnations from 1950 to 1977. It was first created in the 1949 redistribution preceding the 1950 election, covering the central Queensland area around the Shire of Belyando. It was abolished in the redistribution preceding the 1960 election, its territory taken up by the district of Barcoo expanding eastward. It was revived again in the 1971 redistribution, and was renamed Peak Downs from the 1977 election onwards. It is pronounced Bel-yando. Belyando River
The Belyando River, including the Belyando River (Western Branch), is a river system located in Central Queensland, Australia. At in length and with a catchment area of , the Belyando River system is one of the longest rivers in Queensland. It is pronounced Bel-yando. Tom Foley (Australian Politician)
Thomas Andrew Foley (26 April 1886 – 5 February 1973) was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Foley was born in Charters Towers to Andrew Foley and his wife Margaret (née McKeegan). He was educated at Charters Towers State School and later studied at night school. After he left school Foley held various jobs before becoming a contractor, supplying timber sleepers to the railways. National Party Of Australia – Queensland
The National Party of Australia – Queensland (NPA-Q), commonly known as Queensland Nationals, or the National Party of Queensland, was the Queensland-state branch of the National Party of Australia (NPA) until 2008. Prior to 1974, it was known as the Country Party. Formed in 1915 by the Queensland Farmers' Union (QFU) and serving as the state branch of the National Party of Australia, it initially sought to represent the interests of the farmers but over time became a more general conservative political party in the state, leading to much debate about relations with other conservative parties and a string of mergers that were soon undone. Vince Lester
Vincent Patrick Lester (born 28 July 1939) is an Australian politician. He was a National Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1974 to 2004, representing in succession the electorates of Belyando, Peak Downs and then Keppel. He served as a minister in several National Party governments throughout his career, having first been promoted in 1983 as part of Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen's cabinet. Following his retirement from parliament Lester was employed as a political advisor on the staff of Senator Ron Boswell, a senator for Queensland. Lester received a Centenary Medal on 1 January 2001 for "service to Australian society through parliament". Eugene O'Donnell
Eugene Christopher O'Donnell (28 November 1913 - 16 August 1982) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography O'Donnell was born in Bathurst, New South Wales, the son of Michael Patrick O'Donnell and his wife Mary (née Scanlon). He was educated at St Laurence's College in Brisbane before attending the Brisbane Teachers College. He was then posted to various schools around southern and central Queensland as a teacher and school principal. On The 10th Aug 1936 O'Donnell married Emily Conlon and together had a son and a daughter. Queensland Labor Party
The Queensland Labor Party (QLP) was a political party of Queensland, Australia formed in 1957 by a breakaway group of the then ruling Labor Party Government after the expulsion of Premier Vince Gair. In 1962 the party became the Queensland section of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP). The party continued to hold seats in the Queensland state parliament until 1972, then suffered a collapse in its vote and wound itself up in 1978. History In Queensland, Vince Gair became Labor leader and premier in 1952. The Central Executive of the ALP expelled Gair on 24 April 1957 because of his support of the Groupers. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. It has functioned in the state since the 1880s. History Trade unionists in Queensland had begun attempting to secure parliamentary representation as early as the mid-1880s. William McNaughton Galloway, the president of the Seamen's Union, mounted an unsuccessful campaign as an independent in an 1886 by-election. A Workers' Political Reform Association was founded to nominate candidates for the 1888 election, at which the Brisbane Trades and Labor Council endorsed six candidates. 1977 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 12 November 1977 to elect the 82 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election resulted in a fourth consecutive victory for the National-Liberal Coalition under Joh Bjelke-Petersen. It was the eighth victory of the National Party in Queensland since it first came to office in 1957. Issues The major issue in the election was law and order. In 1977, the Government had passed a law making it illegal to march in the street without a permit, which were rarely given. The Coalition argued that this prevented traffic disruption and other inconveniences to the people of Brisbane, while the ALP claimed that it was a curtailment of civil liberties. Electoral District Of Peak Downs
Peak Downs was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1977 to 1992. Based in inland Central Queensland, Peak Downs was created for the 1977 state election, essentially replacing the former district of Belyando. The district's first and only member was Vince Lester of the National Party. Peak Downs was abolished by the 1991 redistribution as a result of the one vote one value reforms.
