Electoral District Of Baroona
Baroona was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1935 to 1977. It mostly covered the inner western suburbs of Brisbane. It was mostly a safe seat for the Labor Party, but was won by the Liberal Party in the 1974 election. It was abolished in the redistribution before the 1977 election, and its territory divided between the districts of Brisbane Central, Ithaca and Ashgrove. Baroona, Paddington
Baroona is a heritage-listed villa at 90 Howard Street, Paddington, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Benjamin Backhouse and built . It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History The original residence, called Baroona, was designed by Benjamin Backhouse and built in 1866 for William Draper Box on land which the architect had alienated in 1861 and Box acquired in 1865. The property extended from Baroona Road on one side to the outskirts of Torwood on the other. Box had arrived in Brisbane in 1862 to establish a Queensland branch of his father's mercantile firm, and lived at Baroona until 1885. He was a member of the Queensland Club and of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1874 until his death in 1904. During subsequent years the house was rented by two prominent politicians. Hon. Bill Power (Australian Politician)
William Joseph Power (3 January 1893 – 29 May 1974) was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and an Alderman in the Brisbane City Council. Early years Power was born in Brisbane, Queensland to Richard and Margaret Power (née Young) in 1893. He did his schooling in Petrie Terrace and worked as a tramwayman. Power became a leading trade union official before deciding to enter state politics. State political career Representing the Labor Party, Power won the new seat of Baroona in Labor's landslide win in the Queensland state election of 1935, convincingly defeating J.E. Streeter of the Douglas Credit Party. When campaigning, he used the slogan "Power for the People". Dennis Young (Australian Politician)
Dennis Charles Young (born 7 August 1947) is an Australian politician and a harm reduction campaigner. He was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1974 to 1977, representing the electorate of Baroona. He has been the national executive director of harm reduction organisation Drug Arm since 1988. Early life Young was born in Brisbane, and was educated at Kelvin Grove State School and Kelvin Grove State High School. He was a police officer before entering politics; he also worked for the Juvenile Aid Bureau for eight years. Politics An active member of the Liberal Party, Young served as chairman of his local branch from 1973 to 1975 and was a member of the party's state executive from 1974 to 1975. Patrick Joseph "Pat" Hanlon (19 March 1930 – 30 October 2014) was an Australian politician. He was a Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), Labor member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1956 to 1974, representing the electorates of Electoral district of Ithaca, Ithaca (1956-1960) and Electoral district of Baroona, Baroona (1960-1974). Queensland Labor Party
The Queensland Labor Party (QLP) was a political party of Queensland, Australia formed in 1957 by a breakaway group of the then ruling Labor Party Government after the expulsion of Premier Vince Gair. In 1962 the party became the Queensland section of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP). The party continued to hold seats in the Queensland state parliament until 1972, then suffered a collapse in its vote and wound itself up in 1978. Electoral District Of Ashgrove
Ashgrove was a Legislative Assembly of Queensland electoral district in the state of Queensland, Australia from 1960 to 2017. It was located in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, encompassing Alderley, Ashgrove, Enoggera, The Gap and Newmarket. The electorate also contained the Enoggera Army Barracks and the Enoggera Reservoir, a state forest. In the 2012 state election LNP leader Campbell Newman won the seat, and following his party's success in that election became Premier. In the 2015 election, Kate Jones, who had held the seat for Labor from 2006 to 2012, reclaimed the seat. In losing his seat and the Premiership, Newman became just the second Premier in Queensland history to be defeated in his electorate.
