Applecross was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1989 to 1996. The district was based in the inner southern suburbs of Perth. First contested at the 1989 state election, it was held for two terms by Liberal MP Richard Lewis, who had previously been member for East Melville. The district was abolished ahead of the 1996 state election. Applecross, Western Australia
Applecross is a riverside suburb of Perth, Western Australia, bounded by Canning Highway and the Swan River. It is located within the City of Melville. Name and early history The suburb of Applecross takes its name from the Applecross peninsula in Wester Ross, Highland, on the northwest coast of Scotland. Many of the streets in the suburb have names from the area, including Carron, Gairloch, Ullapool, Kintail, Strome, Ardross, Alness, Kishorn, Glenelg, Duncraig, Dunvegan, Killilan and Roskhill. The suburb of Applecross was originally assigned to Lionel Lukin on 28 May 1830. The land was finally acquired by Alexander Matheson, second son of Sir Alexander Matheson, 1st Baronet of Lochalsh, in February 1896. The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. 1989 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 4 February 1989 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Labor government, led by Premier Peter Dowding, won a third term in office against the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Barry MacKinnon. The result was a major swing against the Labor Party, coming in the wake of revelations of dealings between Government and business that came to be known as WA Inc. Kennon Richard Lewis (4 September 1939 – 3 March 2019) was an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1986 to 1996, representing the seats of East Melville (1986 to 1989) and Applecross (1989 to 1996). Born in East Fremantle, Lewis attended Fremantle Boys' School and Scotch College before going on to Perth Technical College, where he trained as a cartographer and surveyor. Prior to entering politics, he worked in various surveying and urban development roles, eventually becoming managing director of a consulting surveying firm. East Melville was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia from 1962 to 1989. The district was based in the inner southern suburbs of Perth. It was a safe Liberal Party seat. History First contested at the 1962 state election, the seat's inaugural member was Des O'Neil of the Liberal Party, hitherto the member for Canning. He was succeeded at the 1980 state election by fellow Liberal Anthony Trethowan—he won unopposed, due to the failure of the ALP candidate to nominate on time, but was opposed by Dr Carmen Lawrence in 1983. 1996 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 14 December 1996 to elect all 57 members to the Legislative Assembly and all 34 members to the Legislative Council. The Liberal–National coalition government, led by Premier Richard Court, won a second term in office against the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader Dr Geoff Gallop since 15 October 1996.
