Electoral District Of Chermside
Chermside was the name of two incarnations of an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. Both districts were based in the north-eastern suburbs of Brisbane and named for the suburb of Chermside. The first existed from 1950 to 1960 and the second from 1992 to 2001. Chermside is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Chermside had a population of 9,315 people. The suburb is situated by road north of the Brisbane CBD. It is home to a large Westfield shopping centre. Geography Chermside is a key destination along Queensland Transport's future Northern Busway, and home to Westfield Chermside, the largest Westfield shopping centre in Australia, with a three-storey Myer and a 16 screen cinema complex. History The Chermside area was first settled by Europeans in the late 19th century. The first plot of land was sold on 23 May 1866, and the population has progressively increased since with a significant increase with the post-war residential development. When the Gympie goldrush started in 1867, many travellers heading north would run into trouble at a creek in present-day Chermside. Legislative Assembly Of Queensland
The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). There is approximately the same population in each electorate; however, that has not always been the case (in particular, a malapportionment system - not, strictly speaking, a gerrymander - dubbed the ''Bjelkemander'' was in effect during the 1970s and 1980s). Alexander Tattenhall Dewar (19 June 1912 – 7 January 1995) was a Leather, leather manufacturer and member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Dewar was born in Brisbane, Queensland, to parents Alexander Sawers Dewar and his wife Elizabeth Fraser (née Macdonald). He was educated at Chermside, Queensland, Chermside and Wooloowin State Schools and the Commercial High School. In World War II he served in 143rd Australian General Transport Company from 1942 and then joined the RAAF the next year where he achieved the rank of Flying officer and serving in England and Canada. The Liberal Party of Australia (Queensland Division), branded as Liberal Queensland, was the Queensland division of the Liberal Party of Australia until 2008. It was initially formed in October 1943 as the Queensland People's Party (QPP), which then absorbed the disbanded Queensland branch of the United Australia Party in 1944. In 1945, the QPP had an agreement with the newly formed Liberal Party, where in the "federal sphere", QPP would be the Queensland division of the Liberal Party and would run its candidates under the Liberal Party banner in federal elections. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland.
