''El evangelio de las maravillas'' ("The Gospel of the Marvels") is a 1998 Mexican drama film directed by Arturo Ripstein. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. Plot "La Nueva Jerusalem" is a small community of believers led by Papá Basilio (Rabal) and Mamá Dorita (Jurado). They're waiting for the second coming of Christ, so they've abandoned the world, searching for a new spiritual life. Mamá Dorita sees in young Tomasa (Gurrola) the signals of the chosen one. The young girl will be the new leader in "La Nueva Jerusalem". Arturo Ripstein
Arturo Ripstein y Rosen (born December 13, 1943) is a Mexican film director and screenwriter. Considered the "Godfather of independent Mexican cinema", Ripstein's work is generally characterized by "somber, slow-paced, macabre melodramas tackling existential loneliness", often with a grotesque-like edge. He is a nine-time Ariel Award winner, including five for Best Picture and two for Best Director. Three of his films have been nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1997, he received the prestigious National Prize for Arts and Sciences for his contributions to Mexican cinema. He was the second filmmaker (after Luis Buñuel) to receive that honour. María Asunción Balaguer Golobart (8 November 1925 – 23 November 2019) was a Spanish actress. She appeared in more than 100 films and television shows from 1952 to 2016. In 1983, she played ''El barón'', by Leandro Fernández de Moratín. In 1984, she played ''La cena del rey Baltasar'', by Pedro Calderón de la Barca. She was married in 1951 to the actor Francisco Rabal, who died in 2001. She died on 23 November 2019 in Cercedilla, Madrid at the age of 94 after a stroke suffered the previous week. Rafael Velasco (November 3, 1947 – September 12, 2004) was a Mexican film/television actor. He participated in the Cinema of Mexico from 1980 to 2004. Biography Rafael Tobías Velasco Romero was born in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico. Rafael started making movies in 1979, when he made his first appearance in the Mexican movie "Malas Influences, Las", he then made his 5th appearance in the American movie "Solo" which was made in 1996. Juan Carlos Colombo (born 7 November 1950 in San Juan, Argentina) is an Argentine–Mexican actor. He has resided in Mexico since 1975, where he studied acting and met his wife, actress Patricia Eguía.
