Eichendorff-Literaturpreis
Eichendorff-Literaturpreis is a literary prize of Germany. It was first awarded in 1956 and was created in honour of Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff. The prize, endowed with 5,000 euros, has been awarded annually by the Wangener Kreis – Society for Literature and Art of the East. The award goes to writers who are closely related to Silesian culture. Joseph Freiherr Von Eichendorff
Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff (10 March 178826 November 1857) was a German poet, novelist, playwright, literary critic, translator, and anthologist. Eichendorff was one of the major writers and critics of Romanticism.Cf. J. A. Cuddon: ''The Penguin Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory'', revised by C. E. Preston. London 1999, p. 770. Ever since their publication and up to the present day, some of his works have been very popular in Germany. Eichendorff first became famous for his 1826 novella ''Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts'' (freely translated: ''Memoirs of a Good-for-Nothing'') and his poems. The ''Memoirs of a Good-for-Nothing'' is a typical Romantic novella whose main themes are wanderlust and love. The protagonist, the son of a miller, rejects his father's trade and becomes a gardener at a Viennese palace where he subsequently falls in love with the local duke's daughter. Dagmar Von Mutius
Dagmar von Mutius (17 October 1919 – 5 November 2008) was a German writer. She was the daughter of a diplomat and born in Oslo. She spent her childhood and youth abroad, in Silesia on the family estate and in Berlin. She studied language and was working in agriculture. She took over the management of the family estate, which was converted into a Polish state estate after 1945. Then she was relocated from Silesia. She worked as French interpreter (business school). From 1950 Dagmar von Mutius lived in Heidelberg. In 1954 the first stories appeared in magazines and anthologies and in 1960 the first book. In addition to her work as a writer, she worked as a literary reviewer and participated in the well-known book discussions on Radio Bremen in the 1970s. Until her retirement, Mutius was a bookseller in Heidelberg. She died there on 5 November 2008. Peter Huchel
Peter Huchel (April 3, 1903 – April 30, 1981), born Hellmut Huchel, was a German poet and editor. Life Huchel was born in Lichterfelde (now part of Berlin). From 1923 to 1926, Huchel studied literature and philosophy in Berlin, Freiburg and Vienna. Between 1927 and 1930, he travelled to France, Romania, Hungary and Turkey. In 1930, he changed his first name to Peter and befriended Ernst Bloch, Alfred Kantorowicz and Fritz Sternberg. His early poems, published from 1931 to 1936, are strongly marked by the atmosphere and landscape of Brandenburg. In 1934, Huchel married Dora Lassel. The couple would divorce in 1946 and Huchel would marry Monica Rosental in 1953. Between 1934 and 1940, Huchel wrote plays for German radio. During the Second World War, he served as a soldier until he was taken prisoner by the Russians in 1945. ''Friedrich Bischoff'' was a cargo ship that was built in 1940 by Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft, Lübeck, Germany for German owners. She was sunk in an air raid in 1943, but later salvaged and returned to service. She was seized by the Allies in April 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed ''Empire Consequence''. In 1947, she was transferred to the United States, and was sold into merchant service the following year.
