Edward Thomson (bishop)
Edward Thomson (October 12, 1810 – March 21, 1870) was an American Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church (and therefore also of the United Methodist Church), elected in 1864. Early life Thomson was born in Portsea, part of Portsmouth, England. When he was seven years old his family emigrated to the United States, settling in Wooster, Ohio. His father, a pharmacist, influenced Edward toward the study of medicine, which he pursued at the University of Pennsylvania. He united with the M.E. Church April 29, 1832, and was licensed as an exhorter the next year. Indiana Asbury (now DePauw) University gave him the degree of D.D. in 1846, and Ohio Wesleyan that of LL.D. in 1855. Ordained ministry The following July, Thomson was recommended for admission to the Ohio Annual Conference, and he was received "on trial" that September. Edward Deas Thomson
Sir Edward Deas Thomson (1 June 1800 – 16 July 1879) was a Scotsman who became an administrator and politician in Australia, and was chancellor of the University of Sydney. Background and early career Thomson was born at Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Sir John Deas Thomson, was accountant-general to the navy and married Rebecca, daughter of John Freer. Their son was educated at Edinburgh high school, and at Harrow in England. He afterwards spent two years in study at Caen in Normandy, France. His tutor there, from September 1815, was Joseph Lowe. Thomson then began working with his father who at that time was reorganizing the system of keeping accounts in the navy. In 1826 Thomson visited the United States and Canada, and on his return in 1827 accepted the position of registrar of the orphan chambers at Demarara. Edward William Thomson
Edward William Thomson (January 1794 – April 20, 1865) was a farmer and political figure in Upper Canada. He was born in Kingston in 1794 and settled in Scarborough Township in 1808. He served with the York militia during the War of 1812 and the Rebellions of 1837, eventually commanding the 5th militia district in Canada West. He was involved in building locks on the Rideau Canal and worked as a contractor on the Welland Canal in the 1840s. In 1833, he was appointed justice of the peace in the Home District. In 1836, he was elected to the 13th Parliament of Upper Canada in the 2nd riding of York. He was the first president of the provincial Agricultural Association and the York County Agricultural Society. He represented Canada at the London at the exhibitions of 1851 and 1862. Edward William Thomson (February 12, 1849–1924) was a Canadian journalist and writer. He wrote a book of short stories and a book of poetry. Life Thomson was born in Peel County, Ontario, the grandson of Edward William Thomson, a member of the York militia who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada. When Thompson was 14, he was sent to Philadelphia to work in a mercantile office; he enlisted in the Union Army in October 1864 (at 15), and saw action during the American Civil War as a trooper in the 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry.John W. Eddie Thomson
Eddie Thomson (25 February 1947 – 21 February 2003) was a Scottish association football player and coach, who played as a defender. He played for Heart of Midlothian and Aberdeen in Scotland, San Antonio Thunder in the United States and Sydney City in Australia. Staying in Australia, he coached Sydney City and Sydney Olympic before working with the Australia national team. Initially assistant coach, he was subsequently head coach from 1990 to 1996. His last coaching position was with Sanfrecce Hiroshima in Japan. Career Born in Rosewell, Scotland, he played 162 games for Heart of Midothian from 1966 to 1973, before moving to Aberdeen and playing a further 91 games with them. After a brief stint with the San Antonio Thunder of the NASL, he moved to Australia and Sydney City in 1977 for the inaugural National Soccer League season.
