Edward Riley (Australian Politician)
Edward Riley (1859 – 21 July 1943) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives for South Sydney from 1910 to 1931. Born in Glasgow in Scotland, he received a primary education and migrated to Australia in 1883. He was a plasterer by trade and became involved in the Plasterers' Union soon after his arrival. He was a representative of the union on the Trades and Labour Council of Sydney and twice served as the council's president. He was a founding member of the Labour Party in New South Wales, twice served as president of the Political Labour League during election campaigns and was on the board of '' The Worker'' newspaper. He was then elected by the trade unions as the employees' representative on the then Arbitration Court, serving for three years until that court's abolition. Division Of South Sydney
The Division of South Sydney was an Divisions of the Australian House of Representatives, Australian Electoral Division in the States and territories of Australia, state of New South Wales. It was located in the south of the city of Sydney. The Division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 75 divisions to be contested at the 1901 Australian federal election, first Federal election. At the redistribution of 1 August 1934, it was abolished and replaced by the Division of Watson (1934–1969), in honour of Hon Chris Watson, the first Australian Labor Party, Labor Prime Minister of Australia and South Sydney's second member. Lang Labor
Lang Labor was a faction of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) consisting of the supporters of Jack Lang, who served two terms as Premier of New South Wales and was the party's state leader from 1923 to 1939. Following the expulsion of the NSW branch by the Federal Executive during the Federal Conference in March 1931, the expelled branch led by Lang ran as Australian Labor Party (New South Wales) in state and federal elections. Lang Labor reconciled with Labor in February 1936. In later years, the term "Lang Labor" also included Lang and his supporters who broke away (or were expelled) from the ALP in later years, forming breakaway party Australian Labor Party (Non-Communist) between 1940 and 1941, and between 1943 and 1950. Walter Leslie Duncan
Walter Leslie Duncan (14 February 1883 – 28 May 1947) was an Australian politician. Born in Armidale, New South Wales, he was educated at state schools before becoming a clerk, and was President of the Labor Council of New South Wales in 1911. A member of the Labor Party, he joined the Nationalists in the wake of the 1916 split over conscription. Duncan enlisted in the military in 1917, leaving in 1919 to successfully contest the Senate for the Nationalists. A strong supporter of Billy Hughes, he was excluded from the party along with Hughes in 1929 and joined the Australian Party, before being reaccepted into the United Australia Party in 1931. He resigned from the Senate in 1931. Personal life Duncan married three times and had four children. His first wife Ellen Cousins Riley was the daughter of Edward Riley and the sister of Edward Charles Riley, both of whom were federal Labor MPs. Nationalist Party (Australia)
The Nationalist Party, also known as the National Party, was an Australian political party. It was formed on 17 February 1917 from a merger between the Commonwealth Liberal Party and the National Labor Party, the latter formed by Prime Minister Billy Hughes and his supporters after the 1916 Labor Party split over World War I conscription. The Nationalist Party was in government (from 1923 in coalition with the Country Party) until electoral defeat in 1929. From that time it was the main opposition to the Labor Party until it merged with pro-Joseph Lyons Labor defectors to form the United Australia Party (UAP) in 1931.
