Edward Palmer (Australian Politician)
Edward Palmer (8 March 1842 – 3 May 1899) was an Australian pastoralist (so-called 'Squatter'), public servant and conservative Queensland politician. Palmer was born in Sydney. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland for Burke 1883 to 1888, member for Carpentaria 1888-1893 and Flinders from 1889 to 1896. He was a supporter of Thomas McIlwraith. Electoral District Of Burke
Burke was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1873 to 1932, and again from 1960 to 1972. It covered remote rural areas in Northwest Queensland. It originally existed as a single-member district until 1888, when it was changed to a dual-member district. This was changed at the next election when it was split into two single electorates - Burke and Croydon. Burke was amalgamated into the district of Carpentaria from the 1932 election, but was revived for the 1960 election, until it was finally abolished at the 1972 election and renamed Mount Isa. The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. It has been the only unicameral state legislature in the country since the upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. The City of Rockhampton was a local government area in the Central Queensland region of Queensland, Australia, encompassing most of the suburban area of the regional city of Rockhampton. Thomas McIlwraith
Sir Thomas McIlwraith (17 May 1835 – 17 July 1900) was for many years the dominant figure of colonial politics in Queensland. He was Premier of Queensland from 1879 to 1883, again in 1888, and for a third time in 1893. In common with most politicians of his era, McIlwraith was an influential businessman, who combined his parliamentary career with a prosperous involvement in the pastoral industry. Early life Thomas McIlwraith was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1835, one of four sons of John McIlwraith, plumber and shipowner, and his wife Janet Hamilton ''née'' Howat. Electoral District Of Flinders (Queensland)
The electoral district of Flinders was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was first created in 1887, effective 1888, covering the area centred on the central Queensland towns of Cloncurry, Richmond and Hughenden. It replaced the Electoral district of Burke. Flinders, along with parts of Burke, was incorporated into the new seat of Carpentaria in the 1931 redistribution, effective in 1932. It was abolished in a redistribution in 1991, effective 1992. Most of its territory became part of Charters Towers, while the western portion, including Cloncurry, became part of Mount Isa. The last sitting member for Flinders was Bob Katter, who had held it since December 1974. Carpentaria was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. History Carpentaria was created by the Electoral Districts Act of 1887, taking effect at the 1888 elections. It was based in far northern Queensland. Carpentaria was abolished at the 1912 elections, split into Electoral district of Burke and Electoral district of Cook. Carpentaria was recreated at the 1932 elections, replacing Flinders. The Legislative Assembly of Queensland is the sole chamber of the unicameral Parliament of Queensland established under the Constitution of Queensland. Elections are held every four years and are done by full preferential voting. The Assembly has 93 members, who have used the letters MP after their names since 2000 (previously they were styled MLAs). Squatter
Squatting is the action of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land or a building, usually residential, that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have lawful permission to use. The United Nations estimated in 2003 that there were one billion slum residents and squatters globally. Squatting occurs worldwide and tends to occur when people who are poor and homeless find empty buildings or land to occupy for housing. It has a long history, broken down by country below.
