Edward Murphy (politician)
Edward Murphy (July 26, 1818 – December 5, 1895) was a Canadian politician. Born in County Carlow, Ireland, he emigrated to Lower Canada when he was six. He was appointed to the Senate for the division of Victoria, Quebec on the advice of Sir John A. Macdonald in 1889. A Liberal-Conservative, he served until his death in 1895. In 1882, he was made a Knight of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. The Senate of Canada (french: region=CA, Sénat du Canada) is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister. The explicit basis on which appointment is made and the chamber's size is set, at 105 members, is by province or territory assigned to 'divisions'. The Constitution divides provinces of Canada geographically among four regions, which are represented equally. Senatorial appointments were originally for life; since 1965, they have been subject to a mandatory retirement age of 75. In archival science, a fonds is a group of documents that share the same origin and that have occurred naturally as an outgrowth of the daily workings of an agency, individual, or organization. An example of a fonds could be the writings of a poet that were never published or the records of an institution during a specific period. Fonds are a part of a hierarchical level of description system in an archive that begins with fonds at the top, and the subsequent levels become more descriptive and narrower as one goes down the hierarchy. The level of description goes from fonds to series to file and then an item level.
