Edward Bolton Clive (c. 1765 – 22 July 1845) was a British Whig (British political faction), Whig politician. Background Clive was the son of George Clive (died 1779), George Clive and Sidney, daughter of Thomas Bolton. Political career Clive was High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1802 and then sat as Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for Hereford (UK Parliament constituency), Hereford between 1826 and 1845. Family Clive married the Hon. Harriet, daughter of Andrew Archer, 2nd Baron Archer, in 1790. They had several children, including George Clive (Liberal politician), George Clive and Reverend Archer Clive, grandfather of Robert Clive (diplomat), Sir Robert Clive. Clive died in July 1845. Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis, (7 March 1754 – 16 May 1839), known as the Lord Clive between 1774 and 1804, was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1774 to 1794 when he was raised to the peerage as Baron Clive. Early life Powis was the eldest son of Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive ("Clive of India"), and Margaret Clive, Margaret born Maskelyne. He was born at Queen Square, London, Queen Square, Bloomsbury, London, and he was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. Political career Clive succeeded his father as Baron Clive of Plassey co Clare in 1774. However, as this was an Peerage of Ireland, Irish peerage, it did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords, British House of Lords (although it did entitle him to a seat in the Irish House of Lords). Edward Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis, KG (22 March 1785 Р17 January 1848), styled Viscount Clive between 1804 and 1839, was a British peer and Tory politician. He was the grandson of Clive of India. Early life Edward was born on 22 March 1785, the son of Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis and his wife Henrietta n̩e Herbert. He was one of four children. His younger brother, Robert Henry Clive, was a noted politician. His elder sister, Henrietta, was the wife of Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, 5th Baronet. His younger sister, Charlotte, was the wife of Hugh Percy, 3rd Duke of Northumberland, and she was famously the governess of the future Queen Victoria. Edward was educated at Eton and St John's College, Cambridge, graduating as M.A. in 1806 and being awarded LL.D. by the same university in 1835.
