Eduard Peithner Von Lichtenfels
Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels (18 November 1833, Vienna — 22 January 1913, Berlin) was an Austrian landscape painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, under Franz Steinfeld and Thomas Ender. He taught landscape painting at the Academy from 1872 to 1901; his students included Alfred Roller. Landscape painting, also known as landscape art, is the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, especially where the main subject is a wide view—with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. In other works, landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition. The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (german: link=no, Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien) is a public art school in Vienna, Austria. History The Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was founded in 1692 as a private academy modelled on the Accademia di San Luca and the Parisien Académie de peinture et de sculpture by the court-painter Peter Strudel, who became the ''Praefectus Academiae Nostrae''. In 1701 he was ennobled by Emperor Joseph I as ''Freiherr'' (Baron) of the Empire. With his death in 1714, the academy temporarily closed. On 20 January 1725, Emperor Charles VI appointed the Frenchman Jacob van Schuppen as Prefect and Director of the Academy, which was refounded as the ''k.k. Hofakademie der Maler, Bildhauer und Baukunst'' (Imperial and Royal Court Academy of painters, sculptors and architecture). Franz Steinfeld
Franz Steinfeld (26 March 1787 – 5 November 1868) was an Austrian landscape painter. He is often referred to as "The Younger", to distinguish him from his father, also named Franz (1750-1832), who was a sculptor. Life and work Steifeld was born on 26 March 1787 in Vienna. He initially studied sculpting with his father but, at the suggestion of the engraver, Francesco Vasanova (1727-1802), he was enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. There, he studied with Laurenz Janscha, and Albert Christoph Dies. In 1805, he went on a study trip to the Rheinlands and the Netherlands, where he was attracted to the works of Jacob van Ruisdael. In 1815, he married Dorothea Fertbauer; from a family of artists. Her brother, Leopold (1802-1875), was a history painter. Their son, Wilhelm (1816-1854), also became an artist. Thomas Ender
Thomas Ender (3 November 1793, Vienna - 28 September 1875, Vienna) was an Austrian landscape painter and watercolorist. Life and work He was born to Johann Ender, a junk dealer, and was the twin brother of Johann Nepomuk Ender, a history painter. He and his brother were both enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, where he began by studying history painting with Hubert Maurer, but switched to landscape painting with Laurenz Janscha then, after Janscha's death in 1812, with Joseph Mössmer. He was awarded the Academy's first prize for landscape drawing. In 1817, after several study trips, he was awarded the "Great Painter's Prize". The winning canvas was purchased by Prince Klemens von Metternich, who became Ender's patron. This made it possible for him to take part in the Austrian Brazilian Expedition, during which he made over 700 drawings and watercolors. Alfred Roller
Alfred Roller (2 October 1864 – 21 June 1935) was an Austrian painter, graphic designer, and set designer. His wife was Mileva Roller and they were members of the Viennese Secession movement. Life and work Roller was born in Brünn (Brno), Moravia. He at first studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Christian Griepenkerl and Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels, but eventually became disenchanted with the Academy's traditionalism. In 1897 he co-founded the Viennese Secession with Koloman Moser, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Josef Hoffmann, Gustav Klimt, and other artists who rejected the prevalent academic style of art. He became a professor of drawing at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (''Kunstgewerbeschule'') in 1899, and president of the Secession in 1902. The Union List of Artist Names (ULAN) is a free online database of the Getty Research Institute using a controlled vocabulary, which by 2018 contained over 300,000 artists and over 720,000 names for them, as well as other information about artists.
