Edith Patterson (Canadian Politician)
Edith Jerry Patterson (born November 18, 1945) is a Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates who represents district 28, which is based in Charles County. She previously served as a county commissioner from 2002 to 2010 and a member of the Board of Education for Charles County from 1983 to 1995. Early life and career Patterson was born in Doswell, Virginia, on November 18, 1945, where she attended John M. Grandy High School in neighboring Ashland. She attended Virginia Union University in 1968, where she earned a B.S. degree in biology and chemistry. After five years of teaching as a biology and physics teacher in Washington, D.C., she moved to Pomfret, Maryland, in 1973, and attended Bowie State University, where she earned a M.Ed. in guidance and counseling, and George Washington University in 1991, where she earned a Ed.D. in higher education administration. Maryland's Legislative District 28 is one of 47 districts in the state for the Maryland General Assembly. It covers part of Charles County. Demographic characteristics As of the 2020 United States census, the district had a population of 147,401, of whom 111,719 (75.8%) were of voting age. The racial makeup of the district was 50,992 (34.6%) White, 73,618 (49.9%) African American, 1,072 (0.7%) Native American, 5,304 (3.6%) Asian, 69 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 4,522 (3.1%) from some other race, and 11,747 (8.0%) from two or more races. Bowie State University (Bowie State) is a public historically black university in Prince George's County, Maryland, north of Bowie. It is part of the University System of Maryland. The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, Inc. (also known as The Maryland Legislative Black Caucus) is an American political organization composed of African Americans elected to the Maryland General Assembly.
