Edgemont Shelter
The Edgemont Shelter, also designated by the Smithsonian trinomial 3VB6, is a prehistoric rock art site in Van Buren County, Arkansas. Located on a bluff overlooking Greers Ferry Lake, it consists of a panel extensively painted with petroglyphs. The site has been dated to about 1500. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Shirley is a town in northeast Van Buren County, Arkansas, Van Buren County, Arkansas, United States, along the Middle Fork of the Little Red River (Arkansas), Little Red River. A one-time railroad outpost, the community today is oriented toward agriculture and recreational activities due to the river and Greers Ferry Lake. Van Buren County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 17,295. The county seat is Clinton. The county was formed on November 11, 1833, and named for Martin Van Buren, President of the United States, who was Vice President at the time of the county's formation. Van Buren County was a dry county until November 3, 2020 as the county residents voted to make it a wet county. Van Buren County should not be confused with the city of Van Buren, which is located approximately 100 miles to the west in Crawford County just north of Fort Smith. Greers Ferry Lake
Greers Ferry Lake is the reservoir formed by Greers Ferry Dam, a United States Army Corps of Engineers dam in Northern Arkansas. It is located about north of Little Rock. Geography The reservoir consists of two lakes connected by a water-filled gorge called the Narrows. The area of the two lakes and the Narrows totals about with a combined shoreline of just over 340 miles. In the 1800s there was a town, Higden, in the valley flooded by the lake. The farmers in Higden had constant trouble with flooding. The land was purchased, residents left and the city was abandoned, the cemeteries were moved, and the area was allowed to flood. The town has since been re-established on a nearby hill. Many nearby residents and several eyewitness accounts tell that homes and buildings still stand under the water to this day. The Lynn Creek Shelter, designated by the Smithsonian trinomial 3BV19, is a prehistoric archaeological site in Van Buren County, Arkansas. Set on a bluff of the eastern Ozark Mountains, the site includes evidence of human habitation from about 8000 BCE to the historic contact period. The site has been disturbed by unauthorized activities. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
