Edgar Allen
Edgar Allen (May 2, 1892 – February 3, 1943) was an American anatomist and physiologist. He is known for the discovery of estrogen and his role in creating the field of endocrinology. Born on Cañon (Canyon) City, Colorado, Allen was educated at Brown University. After serving in World War I he took a position at Washington University in St. Louis until, in 1923, he was appointed to the chair of anatomy at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Ten years later he was appointed to the chair at Yale University. At Missouri, he began his studies of sex hormones. While it was commonly believed at the time that the female reproductive cycle was controlled by substance in the ''corpus luteum'', Allen sought the answer in the follicles surrounding the ovum, leading to his discovery of estrogen, though it was identified six years later by Adolf Butenandt in 1929. Edgar Johnson Allen (6 April 1866 – 7 December 1942) was a British marine biologist. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1914 and won the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society in 1926 and the Royal Society's Darwin Medal in 1936. Allen was the fifth Director of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom in Plymouth, serving from 1894 to 1936. Edgar Van Nuys Allen
Edgar Van Nuys Allen (June 22, 1900 – June 14, 1961) was an American medical doctor who was a native of Cozad, Nebraska. He is remembered for his contributions as a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Edgar Allen was a specialist in cardiovascular medicine, and particularly known for his research of peripheral vascular disease. His name is lent to the eponymous "Allen test", a procedure used to determine blood supply to the hand. He conducted extensive research and development of dicumarol, an anti-coagulant that is produced from coumarin. During World War II, he served as an Army officer in the Medical Corps. Early life and education Allen was born on June 22, 1900 in Cozad, Nebraska to Charles Edgar Allen and Sue Morrow. Edgar Allen and Company was a steel maker and engineer, which from the late 19th century was based at Imperial Steel Works, Tinsley, Sheffield, South Yorkshire. The site was bounded by Sheffield Road, Vulcan Road and the Sheffield District Railway to which it was connected. Imperial Steel Works The site was the home of the foundry and the fabrication shops of the company, the steel warehousing and magnet shops being on the opposite side of Sheffield Road and the later established engineers tools and railway trackwork sections being located adjacent to Shepcote Lane, on a narrow strip of land between that road and the Sheffield Canal. The Melting Shop used metal supplied from two cupola furnaces to feed a pair of Tropenas converters to supply metals to the foundry. These were a nominal 3 tons capacity each. Edgar Allan
Edgar Allan (February 26, 1842 – October 28, 1904), emigrated from England to become a U.S. soldier during the American Civil War, then settled in Virginia, where he became a lawyer, a farmer and a leading Republican politician. He served in the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1868 as well as one term in the Virginia Senate. Allan also served as the Commonwealth's attorney for Prince Edward County, held various offices in the Grand Army of the Republic and briefly served as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Early and family life Born in Birmingham, England to John Allan and his wife Ann Allan, Edgar Allan was literate and became a typesetter. However, he decided to emigrate to the United States.
