Ed Coady
Edmond Hoffman Coady (May 29, 1867 in Pana, Illinois – April 5, 1890 in South Bend, Indiana) was an American football player and a starting quarterback for the University of Notre Dame, holding the distinction of having presided over the first two wins in Notre Dame football history. Following the first three games ever played by the team, quarterback Joe Cusack moved to left halfback in 1888, and Ed Coady assumed the position. His first start would also be the first victory for the program—a 20–0 win over Harvard Prep Chicago, who had previously been deemed champions of the state of Illinois. By virtue of their win, Notre Dame declared themselves champions of both Illinois and Indiana. In 1889, Coady's team played their first true away game at Northwestern and won 9–0. Pana is a small town in Christian County, Illinois, United States. A small portion is in Shelby County. The population was 5,199 at the 2020 census. History The area around Pana was first organized as Stone Coal Precinct in 1845. Joe Cusack
Joseph E. Cusack (January 13, 1868 – September 4, 1930) was an American football player and an officer in the United States Army. Cusack was born into a military family of Irish immigrants in New York City, but as an infant was moved to Fort Stockton, Texas and later to Fort Niobrara, Nebraska. In 1885, he enrolled at the University of Notre Dame and participated in their military cadet training program, achieving the rank of captain in Colonel William Hoynes' Light Guard, Company A. Cusack played as a halfback in the first-ever football game to be played at the university—an 8–0 loss to Michigan on November 23, 1887. The following spring, Cusack moved to the quarterback position and played two additional games against Michigan on consecutive days in April. 1888 Notre Dame Football Team
The 1888 Notre Dame football team was an American football team that represented the University of Notre Dame in the 1888 college football season. The team had no coach and played only one game during the fall of 1888, a 20–0 victory over Harvard Prep School (a preparatory school in Chicago, also known as Chicago Harvard School) at South Bend, Indiana, on December 6, 1888. The win over Harvard Prep was the first victory in the history of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football program. It was also the programs first blowout win, first undefeated season, and most points scored against an opposing football team. The 20–0 win was twice the number of points scored during the entire 1887 season. Northwestern Wildcats Football
The Northwestern Wildcats football team represents Northwestern University as an NCAA Division I college football team and member of the Big Ten Conference based near Chicago in Evanston, Illinois. Founded in 1851, Northwestern began playing football in 1882. The 1889 Notre Dame football team was an American football team that represented the University of Notre Dame in the 1889 college football season. The team had no coach and played only one game during the fall of 1889, a 9–0 victory over Northwestern at Evanston, Illinois, on November 14, 1889. The victory over Northwestern University was the first over another collegiate football team for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football program. A touchdown (abbreviated as TD) is a scoring play in gridiron football. Whether running, passing, returning a kickoff or punt, or recovering a turnover, a team scores a touchdown by advancing the ball into the opponent's end zone. Pat Coady
Patrick Hoffman Coady (July 11, 1871 in Pana, Illinois – June 18, 1943 in Los Angeles, California) was an American football player and a starting quarterback for the University of Notre Dame. Unable to sustain the momentum built up by the team's two first-ever victories in 1888–89, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football, Notre Dame football program took a two-year hiatus from 1890 to 1891. Pat Coady, the younger brother of Irish quarterback alums Tom and Ed Coady, was instrumental in reviving the program in 1892, recruiting a completely new squad of players, and becoming the de facto team captain. The new team played two games in the 1892 Notre Dame football team, 1892 season, destroying South Bend High School 56–0, and then rallying from a 4–6 halftime deficit to tie Hillsdale College at 10–all.
