Eastgate Street
Eastgate Street is one of the ancient streets in Gloucester, so named because its eastern end was originally the location of the east gate in the city's walls. The part beyond the gate as far as GL1 leisure Centre was part of Barton Street, Gloucester, Barton Street It runs from the crossroads of Northgate Street, Northgate, Eastgate, Southgate Street, Southgate and Westgate Street, Westgate Streets in the West (The Cross) to Barton Street in the East. History Eastgate Street is one of the four central streets of Gloucester, it dates back to Roman times when they established a Roman fort at Kingsholm in 48 AD on the site of the city which soon became the Roman settlement of Glevum. After the Norman conquest in 1066 the city defences were rebuilt, the new work being based partly on the Roman defence. Gloucester
Gloucester ( ) is a cathedral city and the county town of Gloucestershire in the South West of England. Gloucester lies on the River Severn, between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the west, east of Monmouth and east of the border with Wales.
