Eastcote
Eastcote is a suburban area in the London Borough of Hillingdon, in northwest London. In the Middle Ages, Eastcote was one of the three areas that made up the parish of Ruislip, under the name of Ascot. The name came from its position to the east of the parish. While no historically significant events have taken place in Eastcote, there are links to past events in the history of Britain. One such example is of Lady Mary Bankes, who lived in Eastcote for a time, and led the defence of Corfe Castle in Dorset against the Roundheads during the English Civil War. Eastcote also housed an outstation of the Bletchley Park codebreaking activities during the Second World War, with several codebreaking computers in use. This operation became the precursor to GCHQ, which remained in Eastcote after the war until the department moved to purpose-built buildings in Cheltenham in 1952. Eastcote is a London Underground station in Eastcote in the west of Greater London. The station is on the branch of both the Metropolitan line and Piccadilly line, between and stations. The station is located on Field End Road. It is in Travelcard Zone 5. History The Metropolitan Railway (Harrow and Uxbridge Railway) constructed the line between and and commenced services on 4 July 1904 with, initially, being the only intermediate stop. At first, services were operated by steam trains, but track electrification was completed in the subsequent months and electric trains began operating on 1 January 1905. Eastcote is a small village in the shire county of Northamptonshire (Northants), England. It is about south-west of the county town of Northampton along Banbury Lane. It is close to the A5 road, the Roman Road known as Watling Street, about north-west of Towcester. Prior to the opening in the 1959 of the M1 Motorway and the M6 Motorway a little later, the A5 was the main route by road from London to north Wales and north-west England. Governance The village is grouped with several other small villages into the parish council of the nearby larger village of Pattishall. It is governed by West Northamptonshire.
