EOC Refugee Team At The 2023 European Games
An EOC Refugee Team competed at the 2023 European Games in Kraków and Małopolska, Poland, from 21 June to 2 July 2023, as independent Olympic participants. Symbols The team competed under the country code ERT. During the Parade of Nations, the team entered after Ukraine and before Poland, the host nation. During the opening ceremony, the team used a flag depicting the logo of the European Olympic Committees. However, in official games material, the team is represented by a slightly different flag that omits the "European Olympic Committees" lettering. European Olympic Committees
The European Olympic Committees is an organisation based in Rome, Italy, consisting of 50 National Olympic Committees from the continent of Europe.EOC members include transcontinental countries Turkey and the Russian Federation, as well as Israel, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia which are geographically in Asia but due to political-cultural reasons are often assigned to Europe. Among other duties, the EOC organizes three major multi-sport events. These are the European Youth Olympic Festival, the Games of the Small States of Europe and the European Games. The EOC has no connection with another multi-sport event called the European Championships, which are organised by various European discipline-specific sports associations. Refugee Olympic Team At The Olympics
The Refugee Olympic Team is a group made up of independent Olympic participants who are refugees. In March 2016, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach announced the creation of the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team, as a symbol of hope for all refugees in the world in order to raise global awareness of the scale of the migrant crisis in Europe. In September 2017, the IOC established the Olympic Refugee Foundation to continue supporting refugees in the long term. The Olympic flag and the Olympic Hymn are used as team symbols. As the participating athletes marched through the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics, the team entered the stadium as the penultimate delegation, just before the host country. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, the team entered the stadium second only to Greece.
