E. P. Trewern
Eric Percival "Percy" Trewern (1895-1959) was an architect who was known professionally as E. P. Trewern. Early life Trewern was born in Bendigo, Victoria. He worked as a draftsman when he entered Queensland PWD. He decided to leave in 1920 and started his own architecture design in Brisbane where he practiced for his entire life. Architectural career Working during the interwar period, Trewern was involved in designing a variety of projects such as the Country Press building, Elizabeth and Edward Streets, Brisbane (1924-5), Heindorff House, Queen Street, Brisbane (1926) and Inchcolm, Spring Hill, Inchcolm, Wickham Terrace, Brisbane (1929). His domestic work included houses such built in the Ascot, Hamilton, Clayfield, Coorparoo and Greenslopes. Santa Barbara, New Farm
Santa Barbara is a heritage-listed villa at 209 Moray Street, New Farm, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by Eric Percival Trewern and built from 1929 to 1930 by DF Roberts. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 28 January 2000. History Santa Barbara, a rendered brick residence in the Spanish Mission style was erected in 1929-30 for Brisbane businesswoman Mrs Sarah Balls. The house was designed by Brisbane architect EP Trewern, and was constructed by builder DF Roberts. The site was part of a much larger parcel of land - part of the New Farm of convict days - surveyed in 1843 as Eastern Suburban Allotment 19 early 22 acresand purchased in 1844 by John McConnel of Brisbane and Cressbrook. Spanish Mission Style
The Mission Revival style was part of an architectural movement, beginning in the late 19th century, for the revival and reinterpretation of American colonial styles. Mission Revival drew inspiration from the late 18th and early 19th century Spanish missions in California. It is sometimes termed California Mission Revival, particularly when used elsewhere, such as in New Mexico and Texas which have their own unique regional architectural styles.
