E. C. Benedict
Elias Cornelius Benedict (January 24, 1834 – November 22, 1920) was a prominent New York City banker and yachtsman. He specialized in the gas and rubber industries. He was president of the Commercial Acetylene Gas Company and of the Marine Engine Company. The Benedict Fjord in Greenland was named after him by Robert Peary. Early life He was born in 1834 in Somers, New York. His father, Henry Benedict (1796–1869), was a Presbyterian clergyman. His mother was Mary Betts Lockwood (1799–1885), daughter of Captain Stephen Lockwood, of Norwalk, Connecticut. Among his siblings was Henry Martin Benedict, Sarah Jane (née Benedict) Taylor, and Elizabeth (née Benedict) Mead. Career At fifteen in 1849, he joined the banking house of Corning & Co., New York. USS Adelante (SP-765)
The iron-hulled, single-screw steam yacht ''Utowana'' was completed in 1883 at Chester, Pennsylvania, by the Delaware River Iron Ship Building and Engine Works for Washington Everett Connor. On sale to Elias Cornelius Benedict the yacht's name was changed to ''Oneida'' (1887), then when Benedict bought a new yacht to be named ''Oneida'' and sale of the old yacht and conversion to a tow boat the name was changed to ''Adelante'' (1913). During Benedict's ownership ''Oneida'' was the covert site of an operation on President Grover Cleveland, a friend of Benedict's and frequent guest on the yacht, to remove a cancerous tumor in his mouth. She was taken over by the U.S. Navy in August 1918 and commissioned as USS ''Adelante'' (SP-765) in December 1918. Employed in setting up radio compass stations along the Maine coast, she was also used as a boarding boat, meeting vessels arriving off the port of Boston. Thomas Hastings (architect)
Thomas Hastings (March 11, 1860 – October 22, 1929) was an American architect, a partner in the firm of Carrère and Hastings (active 1885–1929). Biography He was born in New York City to Thomas Samuel Hastings, a Presbyterian minister, and Fanny de Groot. Hastings came from a colonial Yankee background, his ancestor Thomas Hastings having come from the East Anglia region of England to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634. Hastings's father was president of the Union Theological Seminary. His grandfather, also named Thomas Hastings, was the composer of the hymn ''Rock of Ages''. He married Helen Benedict of Greenwich, Connecticut. Hastings abandoned his college preparation courses to work with the chief designer at Herter Brothers, the premier New York furnishers and decorators. Henry Morrison Flagler (January 2, 1830 – May 20, 1913) was an American industrialist and a founder of Standard Oil, which was first based in Ohio. He was also a key figure in the development of the Atlantic coast of Florida and founder of the Florida East Coast Railway. He is also known as a founder of the cities of Miami and Palm Beach, Florida. Early life and education Flagler was born in Hopewell, New York.
