Educational technology (commonly abbreviated as edutech, or edtech) is the combined use of computer hardware, software, and educational theory and practice to facilitate learning. When referred to with its abbreviation, edtech, it often refers to the industry of companies that create educational technology. In addition to the practical educational experience, educational technology is based on theoretical knowledge from various disciplines such as communication, education, psychology, sociology, artificial intelligence, and computer science. A massive open online course (MOOC ) or an open online course is an online course aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the Web. Rita Carolyn Richey is a Professor Emeritus of Instructional Technology at Wayne State University. She is known for her work on instructional design and the history of the field of Instructional Technology. Education and academic career From the University of Michigan, Richey first earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1964; then, a Masters of Arts in Psychology of Reading in 1968.
