Désiré-Marie Maistral
Désiré-Marie Maistral (; Quimper, 25 October 1764 — Brest, 17 August 1842) was a French Navy officer. He took part in the War of American Independence and in the French Revolutionary Wars. Career Désiré-Marie Maistral was born to François Louis Maistral, a physician, and to his wife Françoise Yvonne Bouisse. He was the brother of Esprit-Tranquille Maistral. Maistral joined the Navy as a boy on 9 June 1776 ''Licorne''. He took part in the American Revolutionary War, serving on the 74-gun ''Diadème'' in the squadron under Admiral d'Estaing. In 1782, he was appointed to the 64-gun ''Réfléchi''. On 30 September 1782, Maistral was promoted to Lieutenant de frégate and appointed to the 64-gun ''Provence''. On 1 January 1792, he was promoted to Lieutenant and given command of the frigate ''Fortunée''. Action Of 22 October 1793
The action of 22 October 1793 was a minor naval engagement fought in the Mediterranean Sea during the War of the First Coalition, early in the French Revolutionary Wars. During the engagement a lone British Royal Navy ship of the line, the 64-gun HMS ''Agamemnon'', attacked the French Navy large frigate ''Melpomène'', part of a larger squadron, off the coast of Sardinia. Although ''Agamemnon'' chased ''Melpomène'' some distance through the night and inflicted significant damage, the French frigate was able to escape following the arrival of the rest of its squadron under Commodore Jean-Baptiste Perrée. The French ships later anchored in Corsican harbours to land reinforcements for the French garrison on the island, where the population was in open revolt. The engagement is notable for being the first action of the war fought by Captain Horatio Nelson, then a junior captain in the Mediterranean Fleet. French Ship Mont Blanc (1793)
''Mont Blanc'' was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the French Navy. In the course of her career, she was renamed no less than four times, reflecting the tides of politics with the French Revolution. During the Wars of the First and Second Coalitions, ''Mont Blanc'' took part in the last actions of the Glorious First of June, in the Croisière du Grand Hiver, in the Battle of Hyères Islands and in Bruix' expedition of 1799; after peace was restored in the Treaty of Lunéville, she served during the Saint-Domingue expedition. ''Mont Blanc'' took part of the vanguard of the French fleet the Battle of Trafalgar on 21 October 1805, and consequently saw little action as this division was cut off from the battle. The Battle of Tory Island (sometimes called the Battle of Donegal, Battle of Lough Swilly or Warren's Action) was a naval action of the French Revolutionary Wars, fought on 12 October 1798 between French and British squadrons off the northwest coast of County Donegal, then in the Kingdom of Ireland. The last action of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, the Battle of Tory Island ended the final attempt by the French Navy to land substantial numbers of soldiers in Ireland during the war. The Society of United Irishmen, led by Wolfe Tone, launched an uprising against British rule in Ireland in May 1798. The French expedition to Ireland, known in French as the ''Expédition d'Irlande'' ("Expedition to Ireland"), was an unsuccessful attempt by the French Republic to assist the outlawed Society of United Irishmen, a popular rebel Irish republican group, in their planned rebellion against British rule during the French Revolutionary Wars. The French intended to land a large expeditionary force in Ireland during the winter of 1796–1797 which would join with the United Irishmen and drive the British out of Ireland. HMS ''Donegal'' was launched in 1794 as ''Barra'', a 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy. She was renamed ''Pégase'' in October 1795, and ''Hoche'' in December 1797. The British Royal Navy captured her at the Battle of Tory Island on 12 October 1798 and recommissioned her as HMS ''Donegal''. Capture ''Hoche'' took part in the French attempt to land in County Donegal, in the west of Ulster, to support the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Admiral D'Estaing
Jean Baptiste Charles Henri Hector, Count of Estaing (24 November 1729 – 28 April 1794) was a French general and admiral. He began his service as a soldier in the War of the Austrian Succession, briefly spending time as a prisoner of war of the British during the Seven Years' War. Naval exploits during the latter war prompted him to change branches of service, and he transferred to the French Navy. Following France's entry into the American War of Independence in 1778, d'Estaing led a fleet to aid the American rebels. He participated in a failed Franco-American siege of Newport, Rhode Island, in 1778, and the equally unsuccessful 1779 Siege of Savannah. He did have success in the Caribbean before returning to France in 1780. His difficulties working with American counterparts are cited among the reasons these operations in North America failed.
