Dwaar Kill (Wallkill River)
The Dwaar Kill is a tributary of the Wallkill River that drains a area of Orange and Ulster counties in the U.S. state of New York. It is the Wallkill's second-longest tributary after the Shawangunk Kill, whose course it parallels somewhat to the east. Like the Wallkill and the Shawangunk, which also has a tributary named the Dwaar Kill, it flows in a northeastern direction toward the Hudson River via Rondout Creek. Unlike them it flows entirely through rural areas. Course It rises at Lake Henneside in the town of Wallkill, just west of the hamlet of Circleville. After flowing downhill it takes a brief southward loop, crosses under NY 302, and then assumes a northeastern heading into the town of Crawford. Wallkill Correctional Facility
The Wallkill Correctional Facility is a medium security prison in New York state in the United States. The prison is located just north of the hamlet of Wallkill, in the Town of Shawangunk. History The prison opened in 1933, in the form of a collegiate campus with no surrounding wall or fence. The architect was Alfred Hopkins, an east-coast estate architect with a sideline in prisons such as Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in Pennsylvania. Connected three-story English Gothic buildings of gray stone "self-consciously embraced an idealistic notion of the rural idyll and an old-fashioned sense of place". Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge
The Shawangunk Grasslands National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge located in Ulster County, New York, United States. Formerly the Galeville Military Airport, it was decommissioned in 1994 and turned over to the United States Fish and Wildlife Service in 1999. It serves as a waypoint for grassland-dependent migratory birds. History The refuge first became federal property in the early 1940s, when the Army bought what was then swampland and filled it in with soil from the nearby flood plains to build Galeville Army Air Field to train pilots as a result of World War II. It stopped using the field years after the war, in the early 1970s and in later years it would be used by the nearby United States Military Academy. A culvert is a structure that channels water past an obstacle or to a subterranean waterway. New York State Route 17K (NY 17K) is an east–west state highway located within Orange County, New York, in the United States. It extends for from an intersection with NY 17 east of Bloomingburg to a junction with U.S. Route 9W (US 9W) midway across the city of Newburgh. The western terminus was where NY 17K originally connected to its parent route, NY 17; it now meets NY 17 a short distance to the east at an interchange with the Quickway. It rises on Rocky Mountain in the eastern Catskills, flows south into Rondout Reservoir, part of New York City's water supply network, then into the valley between the Catskills and the Shawangunk Ridge, where it goes over High Falls and finally out to the Hudson at Kingston, receiving along the way the Wallkill River. The name of Rondout Creek comes from the fort, or redoubt, that was erected near its mouth. The Dutch equivalent of the English word redoubt (meaning a fort or stronghold) is ''reduyt''.
