''Dutchman'' is a play written by African-American playwright Amiri Baraka, then known as LeRoi Jones. ''Dutchman'' was first presented at the Cherry Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village, New York City, in March 1964 co-produced by Rita Fredricks. The play won an Obie Award; it shared this distinction with Adrienne Kennedy's ''Funnyhouse of a Negro''. Baraka's stage play was made into a film in 1967, starring Shirley Knight and Al Freeman Jr. ''Dutchman'' was the last play produced by Baraka under his birth name, LeRoi Jones. At the time, he was in the process of divorcing his Jewish wife, Hettie Jones, and embracing Black Nationalism. ''Dutchman'' is a 1967 British drama film directed by Anthony Harvey and starring Shirley Knight and Al Freeman, Jr. It was based on the 1964 play '' Dutchman'' by Amiri Baraka (aka Le Roi Jones) who wrote the screenplay adaptation. John Barry wrote the score. The movie tells the story of a black man who meets a white woman while riding the subway in New York City. Although not shown widely, the film was critically well-received and was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, where Shirley Knight received the Volpi Cup for best actress. Harry Koch "Dutchman" Fritz (September 30, 1890 – November 4, 1974) was a third baseman for Major League Baseball teams the Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago Whales. Biography Fritz was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 30, 1890. Fritz played three years in professional baseball, mostly in the Federal League. He played for Wilmington from 1911 to 1913 and also with the Athletics late in the season for five games for the 1913 World Series winning team. In 1914, he played 65 games for the Chicago Chi-Feds under manager Joe Tinker. While Rollie Zeider was the everyday third baseman, Fritz was the most utilized backup infielder on the second place team. He was the everyday third baseman for the 1915 Chicago Whales. Dutch Schultz (born Arthur Simon Flegenheimer; August 6, 1901October 24, 1935) was an American mobster. Based in New York City in the 1920s and 1930s, he made his fortune in organized crime-related activities, including bootlegging and the numbers racket. Weakened by two tax evasion trials led by prosecutor Thomas Dewey, Schultz's rackets were also threatened by fellow mobster Lucky Luciano. In an attempt to avert his conviction, Schultz asked the Commission for permission to kill Dewey, which they refused. When Schultz disobeyed them and made an attempt to kill Dewey, the Commission ordered his murder in 1935. Early life Arthur Simon Flegenheimer was born on August 6, 1901, to German Jewish immigrants Herman and Emma (Neu) Flegenheimer, who had married in Manhattan on November 10, 1900. Norman Mack Van Brocklin (March 15, 1926 – May 2, 1983), nicknamed "The Dutchman", was an American football quarterback and coach who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 12 seasons. He spent his first nine seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and his final three with the Philadelphia Eagles. Following his playing career, he was the inaugural head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 1961 to 1966 and the second head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 1968 to 1974.
