Dutch Cancer Society
The Dutch Cancer Society (DCS; in Dutch: '' 'KWF Kankerbestrijding' '') is a Dutch Society committed to fight cancer by scientific research, education, patient support and fundraising in cooperation with volunteers, donors, patients, doctors and researchers. By this commitment, DCS targets less cancer, more cures and a higher quality of life for cancer patients. Its motto is, '' 'Everyone Deserves a Tomorrow' ''. Establishment The Dutch Cancer Society was established in 1949. Her Majesty Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands at that time, celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1948 and received a 'National Gift', an amount of almost two million Dutch guilders (currently this would be worth over eight million euros), which she decided to dedicate to the fight against cancer. Alpe D'HuZes
Alpe d'HuZes is a Dutch fundraising event for combating cancer in which people climb, typically by bike, six times in a single day. The mountain Alpe d'Huez is well-known in the Netherlands as one of the main Tour de France mountains where Dutch cyclists have been traditionally relatively successful. The event is organized by Stichting Alpe d'HuZes, whose name is a combination of the name of the mountain Alpe d'Huez and the Dutch word "''zes''" (six) and its motto is "''opgeven is geen optie''" (quitting is not an option). During the first edition, the number six was central, as it challenged people to climb the mountain six times, on 6/6/2006 with 66 participants. Cancer
Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements.
