Eleonora Giulia Amalia Duse ( , ; 3 October 185821 April 1924), often known simply as Duse, was an Italian actress, rated by many as the greatest of her time. She performed in many countries, notably in the plays of Gabriele d'Annunzio and Henrik Ibsen. Duse achieved a unique power of conviction and verity on the stage through intense absorption in the character, "eliminating the self" as she put it, and letting the qualities emerge from within, not imposed through artifice. Life and career Duse was born in Vigevano, Lombardy, in 1858 to Alessandro Vincenzo Duse (1820–1892) and Angelica Cappelletto (1833–1906). Both her father and her grandfather, Luigi, were actors from Chioggia, near Venice, and she joined the troupe at age four. Due to poverty, she initially worked continually, traveling from city to city with whichever troupe her family was currently engaged. Vittorio Duse (21 March 1916 – 2 June 2005) was an Italian actor, screenwriter and film director. Biography One of Duse's first roles was in Luchino Visconti's debut feature ''Ossessione'' (1942). Outside Italy, Duse is known for his role in ''The Godfather Part III'' as Don Tommasino in 1990, replacing Corrado Gaipa, who died one year prior to the film's release. Duse mostly starred in Italian films, although he also appeared in ''The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles'', ''The Sopranos'', and in '' When in Rome''. In 1989, Duse starred in the film ''Queen of Hearts'', and he won the Jury Distinction Award at the Montréal World Film Festival. Death Duse died on 2 June 2005 at the age of 89. Duse Nacaratti (22 June 1942 – 23 July 2009) was a Brazilian actress and comedian, known for roles in films, theater productions and telenovelas. She was nicknamed the "Soberana da comédia" by fellow actors. Biography She was born in Cataguases, Minas Gerais, on 22 June 1942. Many of the theater productions in which Nacaratti appeared during her career were written by playwright and dramatist, Nelson Rodrigues. She appeared in two productions of ''Beijo no asfalto'' in 1967 and 2001. Nacaratti later appeared opposite actress Malu Mader in ''"Vestido de noiva"'' (''Wedding Dress''). Her last theatrical performance came in the 2008 production of ''A falecida'', which was directed João Fonseca and written by playwright Nelson Rodrigues. Dusé Mohamed Ali (Bey Effendi) (21 November 1866 – 25 June 1945) (دوسي محمد علي) was a Sudanese-Egyptian actor and political activist, who became known for his African nationalism. He was also a playwright, historian, journalist, editor, and publisher. In 1912 he founded the ''African Times and Orient Review,'' later revived as the ''African and Orient Review'', which published in total through 1920. He lived and worked mostly in England, alongside the United States and Nigeria respectively. In the latter location, he founded the Comet Press Ltd, and ''The Comet'' newspaper in Lagos.
