James Duport
James Duport (; 1606, Cambridge17 July 1679, Peterborough) was an English classical scholar. Life His father, John Duport, who was descended from an old Norman family (the Du Ports of Caen, who settled in Leicestershire during the reign of Henry IV), was master of Jesus College, Cambridge. The son was educated at Westminster School and at Trinity College, where he became fellow and subsequently vicemaster. In 1639 he was appointed Regius Professor of Greek, in 1641 Archdeacon of Stow, in 1664 Dean of Peterborough, and in 1668 Master of Magdalene College. Works Through the Civil War, in spite of the loss of his clerical offices and eventually of his professorship, Duport continued his lectures. He is best known by his ''Homeri gnomologia'' (1660), a collection of all the aphorisms, maxims, and remarkable opinions in the ''Iliad'' and ''Odyssey'', illustrated by quotations from the Bible and classical literature. Jean-Pierre Duport
Jean-Pierre Duport (27 November 1741 – 31 December 1818) was a cellist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Along with his brother, Jean-Louis Duport (also a cellist), he was active in the musical life of France and Germany. Jean-Pierre was the son of a dancing master, and a student of the founder of the French school of cello playing Martin Berteau (1700?–1771). Career After studying with Berteau, Jean-Pierre Duport made his debut at the age of 19 at the Concert Spirituel, then the center for non-operatic music in Paris. Between 1766 and 1769 Duport was employed by the Prince of Conti, after which he spent two years in England and two years in Spain. In 1773, Frederick the Great the King of Prussia offered Duport a position as principal cellist of his orchestra, and Duport accepted and remained in Berlin for the rest of his life. Jean-Louis Duport (4 October 17497 September 1819), sometimes known as Duport the Younger to distinguish him from his older brother (and teacher) Jean-Pierre (1741-1818), was a cellist, pedagogue, and composer. He is perhaps best known today for his 21 études for solo cello that constitute the final part of the "Essai sur le doigté du violoncelle et sur la conduite de l'archet" ("Essay on the fingering of the violoncello and on the conduct of the bow") (1806), a seminal work of cello technique. He also wrote six cello concertos and his '' Études pour violoncello''. Adrien Duport
Adrien Duport (6 February 17596 July 1798) was a French politician, and lawyer. He was an influential advocate in the parlement, and was prominent in opposition to the ministers Calonne and Loménie de Brienne. Life Adrien Jean Françoise Duport was born in Paris. Elected in 1789, to the states-general by the Paris nobility, he displayed remarkable eloquence. As a jurist, he contributed during the Constituent Assembly to the organization of the judiciary of France. In his report of March 29, 1790, he advocated trial by jury; but failed to introduce the jury system in civil cases. Duport formed with Barnave and Alexandre de Lameth a group known as the "triumvirate," which was popular at first. But after the flight of King Louis XVI to Varennes, Duport tried to defend him; as member of the commission charged to question the king, he found excuses, and on July 14, 1791, he opposed the formal accusation. Louis-Antoine Duport (1781, Paris – 19 October 1853, Paris) was a French ballet dancer, ballet composer and ballet master. Life Born in Paris, Duport studied dance under Jean-François Coulon and began his career on the Boulevards and at the Ambigu-Comique. He then made his debut at the Opéra de Paris in 1800, quickly becoming its premier danseur, with rivalries with Auguste Vestris as a dancer and with Pierre Gardel as a choreographer.
