Dunlap is an unincorporated community in Fresno County, California. It lies at an elevation of . It has a population of 131. It is located approximately east of Fresno. In the 1800s Dunlap was a rest stop for passengers of the stage coach and a location for a change of horses. St. Nicholas Ranch, a conference and retreat center run by the Greek Orthodox Church, is a major attraction. The Greek Orthodox Monastery (Convent) of the Theotokos, the Life-Giving Spring is also located there. Prior to the acquisition of the land by the ranch and the monastery, the land was known as the Sally K Ranch with two of the old ranch dwellings now being occupied by the ranch manager and assigned clergy. On the ranch property itself, there is an old barn, totally constructed of redwood, with a chapel inside (on the second floor). Dunlap is part of the Peoria metropolitan area and growth in the city of Peoria is extending towards the village. There are only a handful of businesses in the village's 16 blocks. History The town of Dunlap was officially established on June 12, 1871 on 40 acres of land owned by Alva Dunlap. The site of his former home is now occupied by the Prospect United Methodist Church. The town was originally located along the Rock Island Railroad. A post office has been in operation at Dunlap since 1871. Once a small farming community, by the 1980s it had become a suburb of Elkhart and Goshen, Indiana. Dunlap is a city in Morris County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 27. History On March 19, 1874, a post office was established in Hillsborough, Kansas. It was later reestablished on April 20 of the same year as Dunlap, Kansas. This was named after an Indian agent representing the Kanza tribe named Joseph Gage Dunlap who had founded the town in 1869 once the Kanza tribe had migrated to Oklahoma. The David Dunlap Observatory (DDO) is an astronomical observatory site in Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1935, it was owned and operated by the University of Toronto until 2008. It was then acquired by the city of Richmond Hill, which provides a combination of heritage preservation, unique recreation opportunities and a celebration of the astronomical history of the site. Its primary instrument is a reflector telescope, at one time the second-largest telescope in the world, and still the largest in Canada. Several other telescopes are also located at the site, which formerly also included a small radio telescope.
