Duncan MacDonald (politician)
Duncan MacDonald (30 June 1885 – 28 September 1977) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography MacDonald was born at Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Thomas Duncan MacDonald Snr and his wife Christina (née McLean). He was educated at the Glasgow Academy University of Edinburgh and after arriving in Queensland in 1908 took up a variety of bush related jobs. He became the manager of a sugar plantation and then an inspector with the Bureau of Sugar Experiment stations. In his youth, Macdonald was a noted boxer and played first-class rugby union. He was a member of the Queensland Club and a councilor and steward on the Royal National Association. Electoral District Of Stanley (Queensland)
The electoral district of Stanley was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland. History Stanley was created by the ''Electoral Districts Act'' of 1872 as a single-member seat (taking effect from 1873). From 1878 it became a two-member constituency through incorporation of part of the Electoral district of West Moreton from which it had been derived in 1872. Stanley was abolished in the 1949 redistribution which placed most of it in the new Electoral district of Somerset. Glasgow Academy
The Glasgow Academy is a coeducational independent day school for pupils aged 3–18 in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2016, it had the third-best Higher level exam results in Scotland. Founded in 1845, it is the oldest continuously fully independent school in Glasgow. History The school war memorial was designed by former pupil Alexander Nisbet Paterson in 1922. In 1981 the school admitted girl pupils for the first time. In 1991, Glasgow Academy merged with Westbourne School for Girls, adopting the distinctive purple of its uniform in the school badge and tartan. It is located in the Kelvinbridge area and has approximately 1350 pupils, split between three preparatory school sites and a senior school. The current rector is Matthew Pearce, who has held the position since 2019. Shire is a traditional term for an administrative division of land in Great Britain and some other English-speaking countries such as Australia and New Zealand. It is generally synonymous with county. It was first used in Wessex from the beginning of Anglo-Saxon settlement, and spread to most of the rest of England in the tenth century. 1938 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 2 April 1938 to elect the 62 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The Labor government of Premier William Forgan Smith was seeking a third term in office. During the previous term, the Country and United Australia parties had emerged from the united Country and Progressive National Party, which had represented conservative forces for over a decade. The most notable feature of the election campaign was the Protestant Labor Party, established in 1937, which claimed that the Forgan Smith Ministry was disproportionately Catholic and made extravagant claims that three-quarters of all police and public servants in the State were Catholic. Despite the campaign, Labor only lost one seat, Kelvin Grove, to the party. The Queensland Government is the democratic administrative authority of the Australian state of Queensland. The Government of Queensland, a parliamentary constitutional monarchy was formed in 1859 as prescribed in its Constitution, as amended from time to time. The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) is an organisation which aims to promote and encourage the development of agricultural, industrial, manufacturing and cultural resources of Queensland, Australia. The RNA owns and operates the Brisbane Exhibition Ground, situated 1.6 kilometres from the Brisbane central business district. The RNA runs the annual Royal Queensland Show, commonly known as the ''Brisbane Exhibition'' or by the contraction ''Ekka'', for 9 days each year in August at the RNA Showgrounds. The Ekka is the largest event in Queensland, attracting an average of 400,000 people each year to its competitions, exhibits and entertainments.
