Duke Of York Inn, Toronto
The Duke of York, known as the Duke of York Hotel for many years and now as The Duke Toronto, is a historic structure in Leslieville, Toronto, Ontario. It is located at 1225 Queen Street East, at the corner of Queen Street and Leslie Avenue. The building site was originally known as "Uncle Tom's Cabin", presumably after the novel or Ontario site of the same name. A brick structure on the same lot, originally known as the Morin House, was constructed in 1870. The name later changed to the Duke of York Hotel. Originally known as "The Duke of York", the building served as an inn with a restaurant/pub on the main floor. The inn no longer operates, but the restaurant and bar is still in business. For many years a mural of John Wayne was painted on the wall of the first floor of the building's exterior. Spadina Hotel
The Spadina Hotel was one of the names of the hotels operated at 460 King Street West, in Toronto, at the corner of Spadina Avenue and King Street. The hotel was built in late 1873, the three storey Victorian building featuring a small clock on the east facade. A four-storey annex was later built to the north of the hotel. It has been known by at least half dozen names, and has had many proprietors. It is now a commercial office building. History Initially the hotel was owned by James Richardson, and known as Richardson House. Robert Falconer acquired it in 1906, and renamed it the Hotel Falconer. Charles Zeigler acquired it in 1914, and renamed it the Zeigler′s Hotel. In 1917 the Chartered Trust and Executor Company foreclosed on the hotel′s mortgage. Montgomery's Inn
Montgomery's Inn is a museum in Etobicoke, Toronto, Ontario. Built in 1830 as a Georgian-style inn, it was named for its innkeeper, Thomas Montgomery (1790-1877). The inn ceased operations in 1856 and continued as a private farm house that was rented to tenant farmers by the Montgomery family until 1946. It was later owned by a Presbyterian church, a developer, the Etobicoke Historical Society, and the Etobicoke Historical Board, until it was finally transferred to the City of Toronto. Once in danger of demolition, it is a cherished remnant of colonial times in Upper Canada. Though most of its current artifacts are not original to the building, they are period pieces, and a few belonged to the Montgomery family. Miller Tavern
The Miller Tavern is a restaurant located in a historic building at 3885 Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario. Originally called the York Mills Hotel and later named The Jolly Miller, the building dates from the 1850s. History Early in the 19th century, a tavern keeper here named Vallière was offering food and shelter to soldiers returning from the battle area during the War of 1812. His was one of many taverns that for years lined what was little more than a muddy trail leading north from the Town of York. In fact, Yonge Street boasted more taverns than any other road in the province. There were drinking establishments, on one side or another, every half-mile between Toronto and Lake Simcoe. Lambton House
Lambton House is a historic former inn in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is the last remaining building from the former village of Lambton Mills along the Humber River. The inn was established in 1847, with its present building erected in 1860. History The original structure was built in 1847, Lambton House was part of the Lambton Mills complex which also included a large grist mill, a saw mill, a woolen mill, stables, a general store and a post office. The brick work was designed, we believe, by architect William Tyrrell, father of cartographer Joseph Tyrrell. The building, and most of the surrounding land, was owned by William Pearce Howland, Ontario's second Lieutenant Governor and a Father of Confederation. Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (Frederick Augustus; 16 August 1763 – 5 January 1827) was the second son of George III, King of the United Kingdom and Hanover, and his consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A soldier by profession, from 1764 to 1803 he was Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück in the Holy Roman Empire. Leslieville
Leslieville is a neighbourhood in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, situated east of the Don River. It is bounded by the Canadian National railway line and Gerrard Street to the north, McGee Street to the west, Eastern Avenue to south, and Coxwell Avenue to the east. History This east-end neighbourhood forms part of the broader neighbourhood of South Riverdale. Leslieville began as a small village in the 1850s, which grew up around the Toronto Nurseries owned by George Leslie (1804-1893) and sons, after whom the community is named. Duke of York is a title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. Since the 15th century, it has, when granted, usually been given to the second son of English (later British) monarchs.
