Dudley S. Brown
Dudley Southworth Brown (March 30, 1896 – March 10, 1971) was an officer of the United States Marine Corps with the rank of major general, who served on the High staff positions during World War II. Early years Brown was born on March 30, 1896, in Fort Whipple, Arizona. After graduating from University of Arizona in 1917, he enlisted in the Marine Corps on 18 June 1917 and was commissioned second lieutenant on the same date. His first assignment was with the newly activated 11th Marine Regiment, which was sent to France in October 1918 in the closing months of World War One. Brown did not see combat, and returned to the United States with the rest of the regiment in July 1919. After his return, Brown served for almost two years at Marine Barracks in Boston, Massachusetts. He was then assigned to the 15th Marine Regiment within 2nd Brigade of Marines, on deployment to the Dominican Republic. Fort Whipple, Arizona
Fort Whipple is a former United States (U.S.) Army post originally established at Del Rio Springs, north of present day Chino Valley, Arizona, and later relocated to a site in present day Prescott, Arizona. History The initial post was established by Major Edward Banker Willis and Captain Nathaniel J. Pishon on December 23, 1863. They led Companies C and F of the First California Volunteers and built the post under General Order #27 issued by General James Henry Carleton. The post was named Fort Whipple, after Amiel Weeks Whipple, an American military officer and topographical engineer. He served as a brigadier general in the American Civil War, and was mortally wounded on May 7, 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville in Virginia. The Battle of Iwo Jima (19 February – 26 March 1945) was a major battle in which the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and United States Navy (USN) landed on and eventually captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) during World War II. The American invasion, designated Operation Detachment, had the purpose of capturing the island with its two airfields: South Field and Central Field. Harry Lee (United States Marine)
Harry Lee (June 4, 1872 – May 13, 1935) was a decorated major general in the United States Marine Corps and a military governor of Santo Domingo. Early life and education Harry Lee was born in Washington, D.C., on 4 June 1872. Career Lee was appointed as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps for the Spanish–American War on 2 August 1898. He served at the Havana Naval Station during the war, and following it, aboard various ships of the United States Navy and many Marine Corps stations. Lee took command of the 6th Marine Regiment in June 1918, a year after the American entry into World War I, in succession to Albertus W. Catlin, who had been badly wounded. He led the unit through the battles at Château-Thierry, St. Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, marching with the Army to the Rhine. The 15th Marine Regiment (15th Marines) is an inactive United States Marine Corps infantry and later artillery regiment. History Infantry regiment The 15th Marines was first organized on November 26, 1918, as an infantry regiment. It was deployed to the Dominican Republic on February 26, 1919, and saw action against Dominican rebels during the American occupation of the Dominican Republic. Having been organized for possible deployment to Europe in the event that hostilities resumed, the 15th Marines remained on garrison duty in the Dominican Republic. It was deactivated on August 1, 1922 and its assets were absorbed into the 1st and 4th Regiments. The 11th Marine Regiment is an artillery regiment of the United States Marine Corps based at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California. Known as the "Cannon Cockers", the regiment falls under the command of the 1st Marine Division and the I Marine Expeditionary Force.
