Dudley M. Hughes
Dudley Mays Hughes (October 10, 1848 – January 20, 1927) was an American politician, farmer and railroad executive. Hughes was born in Jeffersonville, Georgia, and attended the University of Georgia in Athens. In 1882, Hughes was elected to the Georgia Senate and reelected the next year. From 1904 to 1906, he served as the president of the Georgia State Agricultural Society. In 1905, he became a UGA trustee and remained on that board until his death. He also served on the board of trustees for the Danville School, the Georgia State Normal Institute and the Georgia State Agricultural College. Hughes was involved in several business including Magnolia Orchard and the Georgia Fruit Land Company. He served as president of the Georgia Fruit Growers Association. After serving as one of the original founders of the Macon, Dublin & Savannah Railroad chartered in 1885, Hughes served as its president until 1891 and as a director. Jeffersonville, Georgia
The city of Jeffersonville is the largest city and county seat of Twiggs County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,035 at the 2010 census, down from 1,209 in 2000. Jeffersonville is part of the Macon Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The city was named after the Jefferson family of settlers. Jeffersonville was named county seat in 1868, when the seat was transferred from Marion. Geography Jeffersonville is located at (32.683982, -83.339683). The city is located in the central part of the state, very close to the geographic center of the state. Dudley is a city in Laurens County, Georgia, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census, up from 447 in 2000. It is part of the Dublin Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Dudley had its start in 1891 when the railroad was extended to that point. The city was named for Senator Dudley Mays Hughes. Geography Dudley is located in western Laurens County at (32.538345, -83.076179). U.S. Route 80 passes just north of the center of town, leading east to Dublin, the county seat, and west to Montrose. Interstate 16 passes through the south end of the city, with access from Exit 42. I-16 leads northwest to Macon and east to Savannah. Macon, Dublin & Savannah Railroad
The Macon, Dublin and Savannah Railroad (reporting mark MDS) was chartered in 1885 as the Macon and Dublin Railroad. It was built to connect its namesake towns, Macon and Dublin. Eventually, it became a 96-mile short line operating between Macon and Vidalia. History The oldest predecessor of the MD&S was the Griswoldville & Jeffersonville Railroad Company, incorporated in 1872. However, The construction of the Macon to Dublin line lasted from 1885 to 1892. The railroad was restructured during this time, and between the years of 1901 and 1902, the construction of the line from Dublin to Vidalia was completed. The railroad had plans to continue to Savannah, but these fell out, mostly due to the Central of Georgia not wanting to have a competitor. They were also granted some land in Macon to be used as a shop complex.
