Ducati Monster 696
The Ducati Monster 696 is a standard or "naked" motorcycle, made by Ducati from 2008 through 2014. Background Since its launch in 1993, Ducati had sold over 200,000 Monsters, which at one time amounted to 60% of Ducati's production. The initial Monster was cheap and easy to build and has remained so during its long life. Ducati's "less-is-more" rationale of the Monster range aimed to combine high performance in a compact motorcycle. Ducati recently updated the Monster range, with redesigned components to improve performance and appearance. In 2022 Will Burgess repurposed one of these to make a custom Carbon Fibre Monster 696. Specifications Engine and drivetrain The engine is the "Desmodue", a 90° L-twin, air-cooled engine with desmodromic valve actuation. A slipper clutch prevents locking of the rear wheel through clumsy down-shifting. Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A. () is the motorcycle-manufacturing division of Italian company Ducati, headquartered in Bologna, Italy. The company is directly owned by Italian automotive manufacturer Lamborghini, whose German parent company is Audi, itself owned by the Volkswagen Group. History In 1926 Antonio Cavalieri Ducati and his three sons, Adriano, Marcello, and Bruno, founded ''Società Scientifica Radiobrevetti Ducati'' (SSR Ducati) in Bologna to produce vacuum tubes, condensers and other radio components. In 1935 they had become successful enough to enable construction of a new factory in the Borgo Panigale area of the city. Production was maintained during World War II, despite the Ducati factory being a repeated target of Allied bombing. It was finally destroyed by around 40 Consolidated B-24 Liberators on 12 October 1944 as part of the United States Army Air Forces's Operation Pancake, which involved some 700 aircraft flying from airfields in the Province of Foggia. ... Frank Melling
Frank Melling is an English motoring journalist and author, based in northwest England. He is an accomplished motorcyclist and motorcycle racer who has competed in motocross, enduro and road racing events. He rode an exhibition lap at the Isle of Man TT in 2008 aboard a modern Ducati Classic. Melling was the motorcycling contributor to the Daily Telegraph's Saturday ''Motoring'' section for a number of years, but was succeeded by Kevin Ash, who later died in a motorcycling accident. Melling is also the author of some 17 books on, among other things, motocross and enduro. His recent book, ''“A Penguin in a Sparrow’s Nest”'', is a collection of motorbike-related autobiographical stories. The Thundersprint Melling has organised a number of racing events and he is currently noted as the man behind the Thundersprint, an annual two-day event to celebrate motorcycling.
