Dublin Contemporary
Dublin Contemporary was a large-scale, international, contemporary art festival held in Dublin between 6 September and 31 October 2011. Originally planned to occur every 5 years, it was only held once, and amidst controversy and criticism. Background Dublin Contemporary was originally planned for 2010 and was "conceived as a documenta-style quintennial", and "a visual art exhibition on a scale never seen in Ireland before". It has been compared to the large Irish survey Rosc exhibitions from the 60's-80's – in fact, Rosc '80 also took place in Earlsfort Terrace. Rachel Thomas was the Chair of long term planning and Senior Curator at IMMA. Alexandre Arrechea
Alexandre Arrechea (born 1970) is a Cuban visual artist. His work involves concepts of power and its network of hierarchies, surveillance, control, prohibitions, and subjection. For twelve years he was a member of the art collective Los Carpinteros, until he left the group in July 2003 to continue his career as a solo artist. His public art The spectator's participation in the work adds to his contemplation. The work arises out of human actions and reactions in the face of contemporary versions of the worldview already described by Jeremy Bentham in the 18th century. Conor Harrington
Conor Harrington (born 1980) is an Irish street/graffiti artist based in London, England. Overview Harrington is known for both his street work and also more recently his gallery work. Early life Conor Harrington was born in Cork, Ireland, in 1980. He started his career in his teenage years tagging and doing graffiti in the streets of Ireland. Most of these nights were called hip-hop nights, where he would hang out at clubs in 1990s Ireland. Dan Perjovschi
Dan Perjovschi is an artist, writer and cartoonist born on 29 October 1961 in Sibiu, Romania. Perjovschi has over the past decade created drawings in museum spaces, most recently in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in which he created the drawing during business hours for patrons to see. The drawings present a political commentary in response to current events. Another exhibition of Perjovschi's within a Portuguese bank consists of several comic strip style drawings which address more European issues such as Romania's acceptance to the EU and abortion legalization in Portugal. Niamh O'Malley
Niamh O'Malley is a contemporary Irish artist known for sculptures and moving image installations. Early life and education Born in County Mayo, Ireland, O’Malley studied at University of Ulster, Belfast, earning her PhD in 2003. She lives and works in Dublin. Brian O'Doherty (4 May 1928 – 7 November 2022) was an Irish-American art critic, writer, visual artist, and academic. He lived in New York City for over 50 years, serving as an art critic for ''The New York Times'' and NBC, as well as an editor for ''Art in America''. Alice Neel
Alice Neel (January 28, 1900 – October 13, 1984) was an American visual artist, who was known for her portraits depicting friends, family, lovers, poets, artists, and strangers. Her paintings have an expressionistic use of line and color, psychological acumen, and emotional intensity. Her work depicts women through a female gaze, illustrating them as being consciously aware of the objectification by men and the demoralizing effects of the male gaze. Her work contradicts and challenges the traditional and objectified nude depictions of women by her male predecessors. She pursued a career as a figurative painter during a period when abstraction was favored, and she did not begin to gain critical praise for her work until the 1960s.
