Druten
Druten () is a Municipalities of the Netherlands, municipality and a town in the eastern Netherlands. The municipality covers the eastern part of the region of the province of Gelderland. One of its key features is the town's church, designed by architect Pierre Cuypers. The church is dedicated to the Two Ewalds, with statues for the two made in the studio , owned by Cuypers and Frans Stoltzenberg. Puiflijk
Puiflijk is a village in the Netherlands, Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Druten, and lies about 12 km south of Wageningen. Puiflijk was a separate municipality until 1818, when it was merged with Druten. History It was first mentioned in 1108 as Puueke. The etymology is unknown. The village is located on some small hills. The Old Tower is a church tower from the 15th century. The church was heavy damaged around 1800 during the French occupation, and was demolished in 1855 leaving only the tower. The St. John the Baptist church was built between 1868 and 1870. The area around Puiflijk was suitable for growing tobacco, and a tobacco industry developed in the village. In 1840, Puiflijk was home to 468 people. Deest
Deest is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Druten, and lies about 9 km south of Wageningen. History It was first mentioned in 814 as T(h)esta (CL I, no. 101) and 997 as Dheste. The etymology in unknown. In 1840, it was home to 451 people. Deest became an independent parish in 1858 when the first church was built. In 1919, the brickworks Vogelensangh opened, and is still in operation. Afferden, Gelderland
Afferden is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Druten, and lies about 10 km northwest of Wijchen. Afferden was a separate municipality until 1818, when it became a part of Druten. History It was first mentioned in the 11th to 12th century as Afrithon. The etymology is unknown. The village started on a sandhill near the Meuse, and developed into a linear road settlement. The church was demolished in 1838, but the tower from the 14th century has remained. Horssen
Horssen is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of Druten, and lies about 10 km northwest of Wijchen. Horssen was a separate municipality until 1984, when it was merged with Druten. History It was first mentioned in 1242 as "de Horsne". The etymology is unclear. The village developed on a sand hill. It contains three churches close to one-another. The Saint Boniface Church was a tower from the 14th century. The current church dates from the 19th century. Peter Hans Kolvenbach
Peter Hans Kolvenbach (30 November 1928 – 26 November 2016) was a Dutch Jesuit priest and professor who was the 29th superior general of the Society of Jesus, the largest male Catholic religious order. Early years Kolvenbach's childhood was born and grew up in Druten, near Nijmegen in the Netherlands. There he attended Canisius College for his secondary studies, where he concentrated on modern languages. He entered the novitiate at Mariendaal on 7 September 1948. After completing philosophy studies at Berchmans Institute in Nijmegen, he was assigned to Lebanon, where he completed his doctorate in Sacred Theology at Université de Saint-Joseph in Beirut. On 29 June 1961, he was ordained a priest in the Armenian Catholic Church, an Eastern-rite church in communion with Rome. Ru Paré
Henrica Maria Paré (Druten, 14 July 1896 — The Hague, 25 February 1972) was a Dutch resistance member, and visual artist. Ru Paré found shelter and took care of 52 Jewish children, who all survived World War II. Biography Henrica Maria Paré was born as the youngest of three children by Nicolaas Paré who owned a brickyard. She was usually called by her nickname ''Zus'' (sister). Paré had a talent for drawing from an early age, and when she moved to The Hague in 1919, she was instructed by the painter . The next year, she met the female singer Do Versteegh whom she befriended for life. She also participated in the painting classes at the Royal Academy of Art without enrolling, and was taught by Jan Toorop. From 1930 onwards, she signed her painting as ''Ru Paré''. Steef Van Schaik
Theodorus Stephanus Gerardus Johannes Marie (Steef) van Schaik (8 December 1888, in Druten – 10 September 1968, in Arnhem) was a Dutch politician. Van Schaik was a Roman Catholic entrepreneur and government minister. He made a career at the Algemene Kunstzijde Unie in Arnhem. As a technocrat he became minister of Traffic and Energy in the cabinet-Schermerhorn/Drees. Reginald Wolfe
Reginald (or Reyner) Wolfe (died 1573) was a Dutch-born English Protestant printer and one of the original members of the Royal Stationers' Company. Life Wolfe was born in Druten in the Netherlands. A learned and devout Protestant, he settled in England some time before 1530 and established himself as a bookseller at St. Paul's Churchyard, London. Wolfe began to print in 1542. He was the first printer in England to maintain a large stock of Greek type. Edward VI made him Royal Printer in Latin, Greek and Hebrew and awarded him an annuity of 26s. 8d. for life. Despite his Protestantism, Mary made him one of the original members of the Stationers' Company. Under Elizabeth, he served as Master of the Company in 1559, 1564, 1567 and 1572. Neder-Betuwe
Neder-Betuwe () is a municipality in the province of Gelderland, in the east of the Netherlands. On 1 April 2003, it was established as the new name of the redivided municipality of Kesteren. Neder-Betuwe counted 25,042 inhabitants on 1 january 2022. History Archaeological excavations have found remains dating back to the Stone Age and Iron Age although it is not known if the area was permanently inhabited. The Neder-Betuwe area is along the northernmost border or limes of the Roman empire. Evidence suggests that a Roman fort (Castra) was maintained where the town of Kesteren now is. Around 1300 the first dikes were put up to protect the inhabitants and agricultural lands from flooding. Most churches are reformed, there are no Catholic churches in the Neder-Betuwe area.
