Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Offaly Senior Hurling Championship
The Offaly Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Molloy Environmental Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1896. Shinrone are the title holders (2022) defeating Kilcormac–Killoughey in the Final. History The title has been won at least once by 12 different teams. The all-time record-holders are Coolderry, who have won a total of 31 titles. Since the beginning, the championship has been dominated by Coolderry, Birr, Drumcullen and St Rynagh's. They have won a combined total of 90 of the 124 championship titles. The Offaly Intermediate Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by mid-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1929. The national media covers the competition. Shamrocks are the title holders (2022) defeating Seir Kieran in the Final, after a replay. History The intermediate championship dates back to 1929. It was the third hurling championship to be established in Ofaly, and was seen as a stepping stone between the senior and junior hurling championships. Over the years the championship proved difficult to sustain. There were no finals in 1940 and 1941, while the 1949 decider was declared void. The Offaly Junior A Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by lower-tier Offaly GAA clubs. The Offaly County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1907. The national media covers the competition. History The junior championship dates back to 1907. It was the second hurling championship to be established in Ofaly, and was originally seen as a second tier championship for teams that were too weak for the senior hurling championships. Kinnitty defeated Kilcormac–Killoughey in the 2020 championship decider, played in the summer of 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Gaelic games. Pat Fleury
Patrick "Pat" Fleury (born 18 May 1956) is an Irish former Hurling, hurler who played as a right corner-back for the Offaly GAA, Offaly senior hurling team. Born in Drumcullen, County Offaly, Fleury first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Presentation Brothers College in Birr, County Offaly, Birr. He arrived on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Offaly minor team before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1975 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, 1975 championship. Fleury later became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won two All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, All-Ireland medals and four Leinster Senior Hurling Championship, Leinster medals. Paddy Molloy (hurler)
Patrick Molloy (1934 – 6 May 2020) was an Irish hurling, hurler. His career included stints with club sides Drumcullen GAA, Drumcullen, Seir Kieran GAA, Seir Kieran and Kinnitty GAA, Kinnitty, while he was also enjoyed a 16-year career with the Offaly senior hurling team. Playing career Drumcullen Molloy first played for Drumcullen GAA, Drumcullen at juvenile level when he was selected on the club's under-14 team at the age of eight. After six years playing in that grade he later lined out with Seir Kieran GAA, Seir Kieran and Kinnitty GAA, Kinnitty before returning to Drumcullen. After winning an Offaly Minor Championship with Drumcullen as a 15-year-old in 1949, he was later drafted onto the club's junior and senior teams as goalkeeper.
