David Rhodes (author)
David Rhodes (1946 – 2022) was an American novelist. He has published six novels; the most recent, ''Painting Beyond Walls'', was published in 2022. Biography Rhodes grew up outside Des Moines, Iowa. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marlboro College in 1969 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from The Iowa Writers' Workshop in 1971. He published ''The Last Fair Deal Going Down'' (Atlantic Little Brown, 1972), ''The Easter House'' (Harper & Row, 1974), ''Rock Island Line'' (Harper & Row, 1975), ''Driftless'' (Milkweed Editions, 2008), ''Jewelweed'' (Milkweed Editions, 2013), and ''Painting Beyond Walls'' (Milkweed Editions, 2022). In 1977, Rhodes suffered a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. ''Driftless'' was his first book since his return to publishing. Milkweed Editions
Milkweed Editions is an independent nonprofit literary publisher that originated from the ''Milkweed Chronicle'' literary and arts journal established in Minneapolis in 1979. The journal ceased and the business transitioned to publishing. It releases eighteen to twenty new books each year in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Milkweed Editions annually awards three prizes for poetry: the Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry, the Jake Adam York Prize (in collaboration with ''Copper Nickel''), and they are a partner publisher for the National Poetry Series. Driftless Area
The Driftless Area, a topographical and cultural region in the American Midwest, comprises southwestern Wisconsin, southeastern Minnesota, northeastern Iowa, and the extreme northwestern corner of Illinois. Never covered by ice during the last ice age, the area lacks the characteristic glacial deposits known as drift. Its landscape is characterized by steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and karst geology with spring-fed waterfalls and cold-water trout streams. Ecologically, the Driftless Area's flora and fauna are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region and New England than those of the broader Midwest and central Plains regions. Wisconsin () is a state in the upper Midwestern United States. Wisconsin is the 25th-largest state by total area and the 20th-most populous.
