Draffenville, Kentucky
Draffenville is an unincorporated community in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. It is next to Benton, and lies at the intersection of the Julian M. Carroll Purchase Parkway, U.S. Route 68, and U.S. Route 641. Several businesses, Marshall County High School, and Mike Miller County Park are located in the community. Draffenville resulted from the construction of the Kentucky Dam in the late 1930s. Businesses sprang up to service the workers on the dam. The town is named for Charley Draffen, a prominent landowner at the time of the dam's construction. The Kentucky Opry operates a music hall in Draffenville. Marshall County, Kentucky
Marshall County is a county located in far western portion of the U.S. state of Kentucky. As of the 2020 census, the population was 31,659. Its county seat is Benton. It is the only Purchase Area county that does not border another state; a narrow strip of land in neighboring Livingston County separates Marshall County from the Ohio River and the Illinois border. Until July 28, 2015, it was a dry county. On that date residents approved alcohol sales for off-premises consumption, making it a "wet" county. Benton, Kentucky
Benton is a home rule-class city in Marshall County, Kentucky, United States. The current mayor of this city is Rita Dotson. The population was 4,756 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. History Benton was founded in 1842 by John Bearden and Francis H. Clayton. The town was named for Thomas Hart Benton, a senator from Missouri. Benton was then incorporated in 1845. In 1908, Benton drove its African American residents out of town, becoming a sundown town along with the rest of Marshall County. On January 23, 2018, a shooting occurred at Marshall County High School, near Benton, resulting in 19 injuries and 2 fatalities. Kentucky Dam
Kentucky Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Tennessee River on the county line between Livingston and Marshall counties in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The dam is the lowermost of nine dams on the river owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, which built the dam in the late 1930s and early 1940s to improve navigation on the lower part of the river and reduce flooding on the lower Ohio and Mississippi rivers. It was a major project initiated during the New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's administration, to invest in infrastructure to benefit the country. Burna is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in central Livingston County, Kentucky, United States. As of the 2010 census the population was 257. It is home to the North Livingston Elementary School and Livingston County Middle School. The name was decided upon by a contest. A young girl named Burna was selected as the winner, and so the town was named after her. Geography Burna is in central Livingston County along U.S. Route 60, which leads east to Salem and southwest to Smithland, the county seat. 2018 Marshall County High School Shooting
The Marshall County High School shooting occurred at Marshall County High School near Benton, Kentucky, on January 23, 2018. The gunman, 15-year-old student Gabe Parker, opened fire in an open area at the school, murdering two students and injuring 14 others. On June 12, 2020, Parker was given two life sentences with the possibility of parole after 20 years. Shooting At 7:57 AM, as students were gathering in the commons, prior to the start of classes, 15-year-old student Gabriel Ross Parker, opened fire with a Ruger handgun, murdering two 15-year-olds at the scene. Parker reportedly went to the school's band room to check with his friends before the shooting, to make sure they were not in the area before returning to the commons area and beginning his attack.
