Dr. L.W. And Martha E.S. Chilton House
The Dr. L.W. and Martha E.S. Chilton House at 242 N. Chilton St. in Goliad, Texas, United States, was built in 1902. It was a work of architect Jules Leffland and of building contractor Bailey Mills. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The listing included two contributing buildings and two contributing structures. It is a two-and-a-half-story Queen Anne style architecture in the United States, Queen Anne style house. It was expanded by a kitchen/bathroom addition in 1925. A carriage house is an additional contributing building on the property, and it has a cistern on its rear porch and an underground storm shelter. A tornado on May 18, 1902, killed 114 people, ten percent of Goliad's population, and injured 225, and destroyed housing including the home of Dr. Chilton and family. Goliad ( ) is a city in Goliad County, Texas, United States. It is known for the 1836 Goliad massacre during the Texas Revolution. It had a population of 1,620 at the 2020 census. Founded on the San Antonio River, it is the county seat of Goliad County. It is part of the Victoria, Texas, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Jules Leffland
Julius Carl "Jules" Leffland (September 9, 1854 – October 21, 1924) was a Danish-born architect known for his work in Victoria, Texas, and throughout South Texas. He was active in South Texas from approximately 1886 until the 1910s. Many of his works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Biography Leffland was born in Usserød, Denmark in 1854 and studied architecture at the Institute of Technology in Copenhagen. His grandfather and father were architects in Denmark. He was married in 1879 to Emilie Sophie Struck, and they had eight children. After beginning his career as an architect in Denmark, Leffland emigrated to the United States in 1886. By the end of 1886, he had relocated to Victoria, Texas. He became one of the most prolific and respected architects in Victoria. Bailey Mills was a building contractor firm in Victoria, Texas, USA. It was first known as Bailey Brothers Planing Mill. The firm was founded in 1888 by brothers Samuel M. Bailey and Ira P. Bailey, both originally from Michigan. It operated until 1917. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement. The style bears almost no relationship to the original Queen Anne style architecture in Britain (a toned-down version of English Baroque that was used mostly for gentry houses) which appeared during the time of Queen Anne, who reigned from 1702 to 1714, nor of Queen Anne Revival (which appeared in the latter 19th century there).
