Alice Townsend Dows ( Alice Townsend Olin) (April 9, 1881 – August 31, 1963) was an American socialite and poet. Early life Alice Townsend Olin was born on April 9, 1881. She was the eldest child of Stephen Henry Olin (1847–1925), the acting President of Wesleyan University from 1922 to 1923, and Alice Wadsworth "Elsie" ( Barlow) Olin (1853–1882). Her younger sister was author and Baháʼí Faith, Baháʼí Julia Lynch Olin who married twice, including to former Lieutenant Governor of New York Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler. After her mother's death in 1882 at the age of 29, her father remarried to Emeline Harriman, the former wife of William Earl Dodge III, in 1903. Stephen Olin Dows (August 14, 1904 – June 6, 1981) was a United States Army artist who served in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. Early life Dows was born in 1904, at Irvington-on-Hudson, New York. He was the only son of Tracy "Pup" Dows and Alice Olin Dows, a socialite and poet. He had two younger sisters, Margaret "Bargy" Dows (who married Swedish diplomat Knut Richard Thyberg) and Deborah Dows (who married, and divorced, Harvard lawyer John Lancaster Burling, son of Edward B. Carmen Vial Dows ( Carmen Vial Freire, formerly Carmen Vial Browne and Carmen Vial de Señoret) (March 28, 1904 – January 1978) was a Chilean diplomat who served as the Ambassador to the Netherlands. Early life Carmen Viale Freire was born in Santiago, Chile on March 28, 1904, into an aristocratic family and was educated by English and French governesses. She was one of eight children born to Donna Carolina Freire Valdés and Don Pedro Daniel del Carmen Vial Carvallo. Her father was a founder of the La Granja, its first mayor, and deputy for San Fernando from 1906 to 1909. Dows is a city in Franklin and Wright counties of the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 521 at the time of the 2020 census. The town was incorporated on May 3, 1892. History Dows got its start in the year 1880, following construction of the railroad through that territory. Dows is named for a railroad contractor, Col. William Greene Dows. Historical sites The Dows Historical Society and community volunteers have restored several historical buildings, three of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Rock Island Depot in Dows was built in 1896. The historical society purchased and restored the depot in 1988 that houses an Iowa Welcome Center and historical railroad and community memorabilia. The Quasdorf Blacksmith and Wagon Museum was built in 1899 and was restored in 1990. This is one of the best equipped blacksmith shops in the Midwest. Dows Community School District was a school district headquartered in Dows, Iowa. It covered of area. History Previously it did a grade-sharing program with the CAL Community School District, with each district having its own elementary school, Dows operating the middle school, and CAL operating the high school. Circa 2004 the Dows district had 154 students. In 2005 it began sharing programs and employees with the Clarion–Goldfield Community School District. The two school districts sought a merger because of declining enrollments and because a State of Iowa funding program for small schools was to be terminated in 2013. The election for whether the districts should be merged was scheduled for September 10, 2013; 98% of Clarion–Goldfield voters and 85% of the Dows voters approved of the merger. On July 1, 2014, they merged into the Clarion–Goldfield–Dows Community School District.
