Downtown New Iberia Commercial Historic District is a historic district in downtown New Iberia, Louisiana, located along Main Street and St. Peter Street, from Jefferson Street to Weeks Street. The area comprises a total of 121 buildings, of which 73 are considered contributing properties, and 9 are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as individual properties or as part of East Main Street Historic District. First United Methodist Church (New Iberia, Louisiana)
First United Methodist Church is a historic church located in New Iberia, Louisiana. Built in 1891, the church suffered severe damage by fire in 1907 and was rebuilt by congregation to its present appearance. The Italian Renaissance style was created by decorating the original Gothic Revival building. Since 1907 the only structural alteration was the addition of an arcaded hallway in 1939, connecting the church to a newly constructed education building. John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. (The other three were Gene Nobles, Herman Grizzard, and Bill "Hoss" Allen.) Later rock music disc jockeys, such as Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack, mimicked Richbourg's practice of using speech that simulated African-American street language of the mid-twentieth century. ''Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie'' is an epic poem by the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, written in English and published in 1847. The poem follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel, set during the time of the Expulsion of the Acadians. The idea for the poem came from Longfellow's friend Nathaniel Hawthorne. Longfellow used dactylic hexameter, imitating Greek and Latin classics. Though the choice was criticized, it became Longfellow's most famous work in his lifetime and remains one of his most popular and enduring works. The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It represents lost loved ones and heartbreak; but also keeping hope as she did in the poem.
