Downtown Brandon Historic District
The Downtown Brandon Historic District is a ten-acre district consisting of the downtown square of Brandon, Mississippi, United States, mainly located along a section of East and West Government Street. The district also includes the 100th block of North College Street, where St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the Purvis House are located; as well as the 100th block of Black Street, where a historic African American Theater is located. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. The district includes two other places listed on the NRHP: the Rankin County Confederate Monument and the Rankin County Courthouse. Brandon, Mississippi
Brandon is a city in and the county seat of Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. It was incorporated on December 19, 1831. The population was 21,705 at the 2010 census. Brandon is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area, and is located east of the state capital. History The city is named for Gerard Brandon, Governor of Mississippi during the early 1800s. A newspaper, ''The News'', was established in 1892. The Brandon Bank was established in 1900, and The Rankin County Bank was established in 1906. In 1900, Brandon had a school, a telephone and telegraph office, a saw mill, two livery stables, two cotton gins, two hotels, six churches, and fifteen or twenty stores. The population was 775. The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic value". Rankin County Confederate Monument
The Rankin County Confederate Monument is a war memorial located on the downtown square of Brandon, Mississippi, at the intersection of Government and North streets. The monument was erected in 1907 by the Brandon Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 1, 1997. Description The monument is 37 feet tall in total. A seven foot tall granite statue of a Confederate soldier, facing west in a lookout posture, stands atop a marble pillar and stepped base. Below the statue, on the west side of the pillar, is a relief of a crossed rifle, bayonet and sword. The base is inscribed with poetry. Inscriptions Inscriptions of poetry are featured on each side of the square base. The inscriptions are in all capital letters. The poetry is unattributed. Noah Webster Overstreet (1888–1973) was an American architect in practice in Jackson, Mississippi from 1912 to 1968. Life and career Noah Webster Overstreet was born July 4, 1888, in Eastabuchie, Mississippi to Harvey Havard Overstreet and Bettie Flora Overstreet. He was educated in the Eastabuchie public school and at Mississippi State University before entering the architecture school of the University of Illinois with the class of 1910.
