Downer T. Bramble
Downer Tenney Bramble (February 28, 1832 in Hartland, Vermont, Hartland, Vermont – October 9, 1887 in Watertown, South Dakota, Watertown, South Dakota) was an American pioneer businessman and politician in Dakota Territory. Bramble was born into a Vermont farming family in Hartland on February 28, 1832. At the age of 17 he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to work in a drug store owned by his older brothers Gilman and George; later he and Gilman opened a branch store in Memphis, Tennessee, Memphis. In 1857 he moved to Ponca, Nebraska, Ponca, Nebraska, where he briefly operated a grocery, and served in the 5th Nebraska Territorial Legislature. He married a woman named Lucinda Brown, but she died 6 months later, and Bramble loaded up a wagon full of goods and moved to the frontier at Yankton, South Dakota, Yankton. Hartland is a town in Windsor County, Vermont, United States. The population was 3,446 at the 2020 census. It includes the villages of Hartland, Hartland Four Corners, and North Hartland. History Hartland, originally named Hertford, was chartered in 1761. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 45.2 square miles (117.0 km2), of which 45.0 square miles (116.4 km2) is land and 0.2 square mile (0.6 km2) (0.53%) is water. The Connecticut River forms its eastern boundary, and the Ottauquechee River flows through the northern part of the town. The Great Flood of 1881 refers to flooding events along the Missouri River during the spring of 1881. The flood began around Pierre, South Dakota and struck areas down river in Yankton, South Dakota, Omaha, Nebraska, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Nebraska City, Nebraska, Kansas City, Missouri and farther south between April 1, 1881 and April 27, 1881. The events provided the first detailed reporting of Missouri River flooding, and caused millions of dollars in damage.
