Down To Earth (magazine)
''Down to Earth'' is a fortnightly magazine focused on politics of environment and development, published in New Delhi, India. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) assists in the production of the magazine. About It was started in 1992 by environmentalist Anil Agarwal, with a commitment to make people aware of the challenges of environment and development and to create informed change agents. Indian environmentalist Sunita Narain, director general at CSE, is the current editor. The fortnightly format was created specifically to supplement the research, analyses and documentation efforts of CSE, also founded by Anil Agarwal in 1980. The objective / founding principles of the magazine, as envisioned in the first editorial, was to ‘fill a critical information gap’ rather than ‘capture a share of the information market’. Sunita Narain
Sunita Narain (born 1961) is an Indian environmentalist and political activist as well as a major proponent of the Green concept of sustainable development. Narain is director general of the India-based research institute for the Centre for Science and Environment, director of the Society for Environmental Communications, and editor of the fortnightly magazine, '' Down To Earth''. In 2016 Narain was named on ''Time Magazines list of ''100 Most Influential People''. She appeared alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the documentary '' Before The Flood'' (2016), discussing the impact of climate change on the Monsoon in India and how it affects farmers. Environmental science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physics, biology, and geography (including ecology, chemistry, plant science, zoology, mineralogy, oceanography, limnology, soil science, geology and physical geography, and atmospheric science) to the study of the environment, and the solution of environmental problems. Nature
Nature, in the broadest sense, is the physics, physical world or universe. "Nature" can refer to the phenomenon, phenomena of the physical world, and also to life in general. Centre For Science And Environment
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) is a not-for-profit public interest research and advocacy organisation based in New Delhi, India. Established in 1980, CSE works as a think tank on environment-development issues in India, poor planning, climate shifts devastating India's Sundarbans and advocates for policy changes and better implementation of the already existing policies. The director of the centre is Sunita Narain. Under her leadership, the Centre for Science and Environment exposed the high level of pesticides present in American brands of soft drinks such as Coke and Pepsi. In 2018 the CSE was awarded Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development. Some of its projects include investigating food adulteration and consumer product safety. Anil Agarwal (environmentalist)
Anil Kumar Agarwal(23 November 1947– 2 January 2002) was an Indian environmentalist, trained as a mechanical engineer at IIT Kanpur, worked as a science correspondent for the ''Hindustan Times''. He was the founder of the Centre for Science and Environment, a Delhi-based research institute currently led by Sunita Narain. In 1987, the United Nations Environment Programme elected him to its Global 500 Roll of Honour for his work in the national and international arena. World Environment Day
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many non-governmental organizations, businesses, government entities, and represents the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment. The magazine was first published in May, 1998 and has widespread circulation across India and abroad.
